Sania was identified as a child with visual impairment soon after her birth. She was brought up by her mother and grandparents who love her a lot. She was sent to a school for visually impaired at the age of three for her pre-primary education, however, they refused to admit her due to her additional disability of hearing impairment. At the age of 7, Sania was then referred to Sense India's partner organisation and was enrolled in programme for deafblind. She had difficulty in expressing herself and only used gestures for communication. Sania’s training was focussed on communication, using sign language, finger spelling, socialisation, orientation, and mobility. Sania is now studying in 5th Standard.
As the result of the focussed intervention, Sania now communicates through sign language, and has improved in socialisation with other children. She can count till 100 and is able to write spellings of small words with 4-5 letters. Sania is also able to do simple additions and copy the words from text to notebook. Her parents are happy with the improvement in her life, and they are supporting her in all the ways to complete her studies till 10th standard and then further plan to send her for higher studies.
Heena, Sania’s mother says, “When Sania was born, I was totally upset and had no idea about the interventions to be given, but after my daughter joining the Sense India’s programme for persons with deafblindness, we could provide the right interventions and I am thankful to everyone who are supporting her.”
I am grateful to all our donors and educators who are bringing meaning into lives of many children and young adults like Sania in India!

Many children now have access to mainstream schools, getting into higher education, adults with deafblindness initiating income generation activities and supporting their families. It has succeeded in creating nationwide awareness about the needs, expectations and potential of persons with disabilities. It is truly professionally managed organization and is known as a Trend Setter in the field of education and skill development of persons with deafblindness. Most remarkable achievements include inclusion of deafblindness in the Schedule 1 of Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016 as a legally recognized disability, motivating and enabling training of teachers of the deafblind, community-based rehabilitation and development of networks of parents, teachers and adult deafblind persons. it has been organizing National and regional level seminars on capacity building of NGOs, parents, teachers and service providers. It has also been promoting sensitization of media as regard achievements of persons with deafblindness. I wish the organization a grand success. It is a matter of pride for me that I have witnessed whole journey of growth of the organization from its inception.
This organization is doing a wonderful service towards empowering persons with Deaf blindness and their families, by running courses, creating awareness and sensitization in the community and carrying out mentoring roles to other organizations and special educators, so that they can cater effectively to meet the needs of PwDB.
Sense International India is one of the biggest success stories in the global NGO world. Established with an Indian CEO and an Indian Board 20 years before "localisation" became accepted good practice, it then increased the number of deafblind children receiving support from 25 to more than 80,000 - a quite phenomenal achievement.

Thank you very much Rich! For all your untiring support right from the start of Sense India.
The experience of working with people with deafblindness in India inspired the work of establishing Sense International in East Africa for the first time in 2003. In short, Sense International India mothered the work of Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania with deafblind people. How?
When I was employed to start the organization in East Africa, I had never seen a person with deafblindness anywhere in the world. My first induction took me to our headquarters in UK on the 1st of February 2003. Three weeks later, I had known about people with deafblindness sufficiently enough, but I was filled with a sense of hopelessness because the financial and technical resources needed in the UK at an average of £100,000 per deafblind person were astronomical, and obviously out of reach for us in East Africa. I therefore was at a loss for a while on how to start the programm back at home. Having anticipated my predicament, Richard Hawkes, the then UK Director of Sense International arranged for me to visit Akhil Paul, the then Country Director of Sense International India.
Akhil showed me how in Sense International India, the children with deafblindness were identified in the community (many people hide them); how the children were introduced to school; how the teachers were trained to handle them; how the parents, who had despaired about their children, were trained to care for them lovingly; how Akhil and his small team developed a curriculum for the education of these kids; how the older boys and girls with deafblindness were given vocational training; and how those who had graduated from vocational training had developed their independence. All these was done at a fraction of the cost observed in UK. We adopted the India approaches and strategy.
I am proud to state here now that the programs of Sense International in Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania owe most of their design and approaches to the experience of Sense International India.

Founder of Sense International East Africa (now retired).
It is with sheer awe that I see the employees at Sense International India dedicate their skills to better the lives of people with deafblindness in India. They have overcome this pandemic and reached out to people with deafblindness and their families so that no one is left behind.

I still remember how they rescue a child that was left during the day with the cows while parents worked because they did not know what to do to communicate or educate a deafblind child
They (Sense International India) went to this remote rural area and taught that family that their child could learn to communicate, that was a person with human rights, etc

I have supported Sense International since 2001 . I'm very satisfied and impressed with their work with deaf-blind children in India - a particularly vulnerable group that requires all the support that we can give. I am also impressed with their follow-up and their reach out activities and their constant endeavor to help the lives of deaf-blind children. I wish them all the very best in their efforts.
A genuine organisation with a knowledgable and hard-working team determined to make a difference in the lives of the deafblind people.
COVID -19 crisis has posed serious challenges for all of us. During the lockdown and after that, many families have lost their livelihood, either the earnings have reduced or ceased. Families with people with deafblindness and multiple disabilities have additional responsibilities of taking care of the nutrition and medical needs of their child so the ongoing pandemic has impacted hugely upon people from low socio-economic backgrounds. Making arrangements for daily meals is a herculean task for many families.
We are grateful to our selfless donors for the valuable support as it has enabled Sense India to reach out to many such deserving families with ration kits, to help them sustain and survive during these difficult times.
With generous support from foundations, philanthropic groups, and individuals, Sense India ensured that essential ration kits are distributed to deserving families with persons with deafblindness/multiple disabilities in these difficult times. Over the last 2 months, our project partners in different States have procured essential ration items even when grocery shops were shutting down. In spite of severe challenges to reach families living in containment zones and high-risk zones, team members strived to reach to such families with help from district administration and volunteers. Most important was to ensure that children with deafblindness, who may have low immunity due to associated medical
conditions get proper nutrition and essential items on time. Providing essential food items meant a lot to the families with the single-earning parent; fathers who have lost their job during lockdown; parents who themselves are aged and cannot step out; families who have spent their entire savings during lockdown; daily wage laborers parents and families of children with deafblindness living in far off interior places.
Expressing heartfelt indebtedness for supporting this initiative to help vulnerable families.

I have been part of Sense International India from the day of inception. In fact, I was part of the interview committee which appointed the first Director. Subsequently, I was Chairperson of the Board as well. The growth of Sense India is truly unparalleled in respect of its spread, coverage, reach and penetration to remote areas as well. Due to efforts of Sense team, the services for persons with deafblindness are becoming a true reality. What a great achievement that the newly enacted Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016 recognizes deafblindness as a stand alone disability. Similarly, the Scheme of Provision of Assistive Devices to Persons with Disabilities also recognizes deafblindness and allocates resources for provision of need based devices to such persons. The Rehabilitation Council of India, a statutory body, also granted recognition to teacher training course for the teachers of the deafblind. It is all due to efforts of team of Sense India that representatives to this organization are now invited to most national level committees on promotion of various aspects of services for persons with disabilities. The Sense India on the occasion of celebration of 20 years of its meritorious services, has convened a national level conference for the educators. About 400 Special Educators shall be attending this conference. Even 4 months before the conference, it is fully booked and and there in no scope of new registration. Such a fantastic response speaks about the popularity of the organization among the special educators. The organization is well known for its transparency, accountability, statutory compliance and professional approach to all its activities and initiatives. According to me, Sense India is most efficiently managed, well governed and well respected non-profit organization with a clear mandate of providing individual need based services to persons with deafblindness. It is a matter of great honour for me that I have a true witness of growth, progress and success of this organization. It has emerged truly a national level, well spread and well respected voluntary organization.
(Explanation of picture - Thanks to Sense India that Shruti is the first deafblind girl who has completed University Level Diploma in Physiotherapy from BPA School of Physiotherapy.
Sense International India do amazing work empowering some of the most vulnerable and marginalised people. The results of their support for people with deafblindness are fantastic and they manage it on slim resources. Their work is helping to ensure that no-one is left behind - as per the Sustainable Development Goals that Governments including India have signed up to. They are also sharing their expertise with non-profits in Nepal and Bangladesh to enable empowerment and support of people with deafblindness in those countries and have recently returned from delivering training in Sri Lanka. They are impressive!
SI India reaches to the poorest and most marginalised by their sensory and physical disabilities and the lack of knowledge and sometimes rejection that surrounds their education. From teaching a child to be able to stand or sit, to brush their teeth, maybe eat and drink by themselves, to enabling the more independent ones to integrate in mainstream schools, to train young adults to set up their own small businesses supported by family member, SI India impacts on the whole family. Parents can begin to see a future of greater independence and achievements both their child and for themselves, they are freed to work without worrying about their child or having to leave them tethered at home for their safety, household income can grow and their family's status in the community is more secure. SI India has improved the lives of thousands of families across the majority of Indian States (23 out of 29), working through training and overseeing the work of local partners, state health, welfare and education institutions, leaving solid expertise behind to continue the work.
Sense International are a fantastic organisation. Their expertise in working with people with deaf blindness is unrivalled and the staff are compassionate and inspirational

It is truly remarkable and a testimony to their accomplishments when one hears of the organisation & its work without even meeting the people that make it possible.
So a review. I, being just a commoner, am not in a position to review the great work that people of Sense are doing continuously for past 20 years. On one hand I feel really happy as I get to know what actually is being done, as couple of friends who are working there keep sharing, and on the other hand I feel I didn't try much to do something for physically disabled, instead I get myself entangled in stupid day to day miniscule problems of life. Kudos to the entire team of Sense India who are trying to beautify the lives of the most beloved humans of God, A big big Thank to all of you. Kudos to the deafblind people who in spite of facing actual problems of life, are trying hard to give some meaning to their lives.
I HAVE BEEN DONATING TO SENSE INTERNATIONAL INDIA SINCE LAST 6 YEARS. THEY HAVE BEEN DOING SOME FANTASTIC WORK IN INDIA FOR DEAF BLINDNESS AND CREATING AWARENESS IN THIS SECTOR.
I WISH TO ALSO CONGRATULATE THE TEAM OF SENSE INDIA FOR GETTING DEAF BLINDNESS RECOGNIZED AS ONE OF THE DISABILITIES AND IS NOW PART OF THE "THE RIGHTS OF PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES ACT, 2016". THIS WILL POSITIVELY IMPACT THE LIVES OF MANY FAMILIES ACROSS INDIA.
THEIR AWARENESS DRIVES SUCH AS MESSENGERS ON CYCLES ARE SOME UNIQUE EXPERIENCES THAT WE GET TO SHARE WITH DEAF BLIND PERSONS.
I FULLY SUPPORT THE PASSIONATE TEAM OF SENSE INDIA AND CONGRATULATE THEM

Deafblindness being a unique disability needs specialized focus and intervention. I have been a part of Sense India since 5 years and i must say that lives of Deafblind and family members are transformed . There is a huge difference in saying & doing ,here we believe in doing things. Sense India does not only focus on Educational, therapeutic, vocational intervention, but it also pursues into a adult being an active member of the society through income generation programmes being specifically developed for the adult. over the years i have seen those tears of joy of the parents when their Deafblind daughters & sons hands over the income that they have earned through their business. I am proud to be a part of Sense International India
Sense International India is providing astounding services for the deafblind people since 20 years. Sense provides a platform to every deafblind individual for living their life full and active. Deafblindness is a disability and Sense is disabling the disability.
I am happy to work with Sense India and support the cause of DEafblindness.
We are a strong team with good values

That was the first time wherein I participated in cyclothon and it feels really great that I got a chance to participate in a charity event. Sense India is doing great work for deafblind population of the country.
over a year ago Like many people i had never heard of a people being Deaf and blind at the same time. Sense India has helped me broaden my horizon with regards to the disability sector.
Highly transparent and ethical in its functioning Happy to be a part of sense India

Sense International India, also known as Sense India is an award winning national organisation representing a little-known disability called deafblindness which was recently recognised under the enacted Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016 for the first time in the history of India. Sense India works with local, regional and national organisations to develop sustainable services for children and adults with deafblindness along with collaborating with the government at central and state levels. Its relentless work has so far transformed the lives of close to 77,500+ deafblind persons who have found a meaning to life with self-esteem and confidence.
Sense India has been working since more than 20 years & it has not only brought positive change in the lives of deafblind individuals but have also made a significant difference in the lives of parents & teachers of deafblind individuals. "Deafblindness" was not recognized as a disability earlier but due to the advocacy efforts of Sense India, today deafblindness is recognized by law and government of our country. Sense India has provided many opportunities to deafblind individuals which have made them not only self confident but independent too. It feels great to be associated with a committed non profit like Sense India
India's only national organisation working for children and adults with deafblindness along with their teachers and parents across India! Factors that set them apart:
Working for a unique disability
100% transparency
How many times have we been tired of our kids, who are perfectly normal, scolding them and telling them to be understandable and calm them down, in times when they don't understand stuff or get sick etc.
The guys at sense do these, but the magnitude of the whole thing changes, because the kids can't hear or see. Imagine yourself at a place where you have to explain to a child what is happening to him/her and then to make them overcome the same and to teach them to live a life. Not just children adults too loose their sight and sound and helping the adults to adjust who have become a child once again, who have to forget all that they have learned and have to learn things all again, is another task all together.
Over and above that, many of us may want to help a blind person cross the road, what we don't realize is that some of them cannot hear you, so trying to talk to them is futile, trying to make a deafblind individual explain that this is going to happen to you on the street, is another task.
So Sense working on getting the kids and individual under their wing, trying to educate them, trying to educate the public about them and to make sure the individual rights of these individuals remain intact, is by far no small act. I was stupified and had to collect myself. Their work and efforts and the efforts of the deafblind individual really minuscule things we do.
Incredible Cause and an Incredible team of people. Working for people with deafblindness in a diverse country like India is no easy task. Yet day after day, the Sense India team - including their partners and the parents and educators of children with deafblindness ensure that identified children and adults now live a fuller life. Highly transparent and ethical in its functioning, it's hard not to be inspired by the work and the people. Kudos and all the best.

Sense International India always look for the first opportunity to support the activities related to deafblind and MSI. We at sahayogini palak santha experienced the speed at which they assessed our requirement, encouraged us to set up the Centre which is now fully operational. The support is all encompassing. Their swiftness always encourage to think big and are a driving force to work for the cause in a larger measure. They are a seasoned bunch of professional at work. We are fortunate to be in the partnership
I volunteered here for 2 week and it was the most productive 2 weeks I spent this year.
Sense is a NGO where they put in their 100 percent for the deaf blinds, where they highly appreciate efforts made by people and create massive awarness about the cause. The people who work in sense are empathetic and love the work they do, And in my view this is what an ideal NGO should be like.

I got a great opportunity to volunteer on Hellen Keller's day and it was wonderful to be a part of Cyclothon on 26th June 2016 which was organized by Sense International India. They are doing great work for the development of deafblind people.
I have been associated with Sense International India for over 12 years, and can vouch for the credibility and transparency. Being only national level organisation working with persons who deafblind, organisation needs support of individuals. Organisations associated with SII are credible and have reputation earned locally.
Patiala School for The DeafBlind had a short association with Sense International India. The Deafblind children gained a lot from their expertise and guidance. Our teachers also learnt new techniques and methods of imparting training. I also attended their workshops and seminars which were well conducted.
However I have few suggestions to make.
1. Not only too much but excessive stress on report and returns. In my interaction with NGO's dealing with Sense International they admitted that they fudge the figures, to please and to show results.
2. Targets given are not practical .
3. Administrative expenses are too high and not in consonance with the achievements.
4. Need to be more transparent.
Sense India is doing a wonderful work in the field of deafblindness. Transforming the lives of children and adults with deafblindness is quite an achievement! , Sense India and would like to congratulate the team Best wishes for all your future endeavours.
kabir siddiqui ( WE THE PEOPLE INDIA)
Sense International India is the pioneer organisation in India working for children and adults with deafblindness. It’s vision is to provide need based services to children and adults with deafblindness so that they live an independently life, have equal rights and contribute as an equal member in the society with utmost dignity and pride. However, with lots of advocacy and lobbing still deafblindness is not yet recognised in the Indian law.
Keep supporting the cause of deafblindness.
Best Wishes to Sense International India and it’s dedicated staffs.
Sense India is doing a excellent work to help deafblind children.By reaching out 71,500 deafblind children and adults and helping him to live her life by her own skill. You can see the change and transformation which is commendable. Appreciate their abilities to support the people with Deafblindness lead a life of independence and dignity. Keep up the good work!
Sense International India's work is commendable not just as a non profit but also because it is tirelessly challenging an issue that is overlooked by society, a unique disability called deafblindness. More than that it upholds values and quality of service to its highest regard which every Organization working for social issues must do. Also i find innovation and adaptability a core strength of Sense India. I am very happy to associate with a cause like deafblindness.
the work at 'Sense India' is laudable...... in essence they help people make sense of their lives, where nature deprived them of the 'senses' to do so. Remarkable Cheers!!!
The team at Sense India is indeed dedicated and committed to the cause. Through its wide network of partner organisations, many persons with deafblindness have access to specialized services. With a strong focus on capacity building, both on technical as well as project management issues, Sense India is known to raise the bar from time to time in the field of deafblindness in India.
When I first came to know about Sense India, I was amazed to realize it worked specially for deafblind. What struck me most was the fact that rather than treating deafblindness as a disability, Sense India strives to empower those affected through training and development on one to one basis. I came to know that some of their on-field Educators are also people who overcame their disabilities and and are a strong source of motivation for those being trained. Right from the Leader to the most junior, everyone in the Sense India team shares the same passion for empowering the deafblind. The empathy is visible and the enthusiasm they arouse is infectious. I appreciate the work you guys at Sense India are doing to strengthen and inspire our special brothers and sisters in the society, not only challenging them to rise up over their challenges but also guiding them through those. Hats off to your efforts and wish you all the best in your endeavours.

I fully support the cause and Sense India and would like to congratulate the team and all those associated with it. Best wishes for all your future endeavors.
Thank you for being there as part of society and helping challenged people responsibly with great respect towards them.
I have worked with Sense International India a number of times over the last eighteen years. I have always been impressed by, and respectful of, the work that the organisation undertakes in supporting and improving the lives of deafblind people in India.
Sense International has been doing a wonderful work in helping people with disabilities. Be it working at the field level ot advocacy and lobbying. All the staff has been very approachable.
I was responsible for the creation of Sense International India. As Chief Executive of Sense in the UK, I established Sense International in 1996 and decided that our first programme would be in India, since I knew Beroz Vacha of Helen keller Institute and the staff at the Blind People's Association. I knew how successful our first programme would be in India, so it was a no-brainer to choose your country. And the work of Akhil and his team have surpassed all my expectations. Some years ago, they had established services with partners in 24 Indian states and it may have surpassed that already.
The work of SII has been one of enormous industry and devoted energy. I cannot commend their efforts highly enough.

It takes a while for all fortunate people like us to absorb and bring to consciousness the meaning of deaf-blindness as disability. We rarely understand, how to communicate with these people, let alone think about how do they cope with daily living.
Sense International precisely does that; it act as a bridge between a deaf-blind person and the real world, by empowering them with not only basic motor skills but by making them self sufficient to live a meaningful life. By advocacy and networking, they make sure that deaf-blind people get equal status in the society.
For this act of kindness alone, i always admire the Team Sense International. Untiring efforts put in by every one from Governing Council to Lowest level employee makes it a unique organisation.
They are driven by passion and work with moral code of conduct and subject them selves to the highest standard of ethics.
I wish them all the best.
My association with Sense International started more than 10 years ago when they hired the selfless leader Akhil Paul as their Director for India. I applaud him and his team for doing what they do everyday and give their lives for the well-being and education of the children that they help become part of our community.
The sad world that we live in still looks at disability as a nuisance and these children with multiple disabilities go through tough times to finally get help from associations like Sense International. If you ever get the opportunity, my recommendation would be to visit these children. For no fault of theirs, they are born with these disabilities. Me and my wife believe that all of us should be thankful for all the blessings we each have and help these children.
Once again, can't thank Akhil Paul and his team for doing for what they are doing.

First of all let me say that I have never seen a selfless organization than Sense International. The entire management team is hands on and experts in working with children who have multiple dis-abilities. The team at Sense International works with children who are deaf and blind. By helping these children to become self-reliant these saintly folks are giving life to them. When i have heard stories from Akhil Paul, Director of Sense International in Asia i have cried. Stories were children were found in villages who have never been out of the hut they live in shunned by society. The only person who would interact with them were their mothers. I applaud Akhil and his team for being the light in the lives of such needy children. I urge each and every one of you to open your heart and contribute to this great cause. You can reach me at javidbaig@gmail.com if you have any further questions or clarifications. Thank you Akhil and your team for doing this and helping the world to be a better place.
I had the opportunity of coming in contact with Sense International India fourteen years back, just few months after I joined this field. I had worked very closely with them. I have seen how they are transforming the lives of Deafblind people with or without additional disabilities in all parts of the country especially working for the forgotten people of rural India. They have been highly successful in bringing this population from isolation to inclusion. I feel so overwhelmed and touched when I visit their programs even in the remotest part and see how the children are provided services at their doorstep by young committed educators and brightening the lives of these children, improving their quality of life and making their parents smile. My salute to Mr Akhil Paul and his outstanding team for their noble contribution to this field. And they have MILES TO GO..............

I have known this organization since the time I joined the field. From then I was truly touched by
the dedication and commitment of Akhil Paul and his team.
In my position of treasure of Deafblind International I had the possibility to have intensive contact with my colleagues of Sense International India over many years. Last year (November 2012) I had the oppertunity to visit different of there projects in different places in India by myself and to write a report about my visit. This report is published in the magazine of Deafblind International (number 51, July 2013). The strategy of Sense India to focuson partnerships to develop services for deafblind individuals is with any doubt very succesful. Very, very few organisatioans I know worldwide are able to work so cost effective as Sense India is managing to do. Very dedicated and skilled colleagues managed to reach more than 50.000 deafblind individuals in 15 year and as I have seen by myself to really change their lives. I can only express my desire that they will be able to reach many more of the deafblind individuals still waiting for any support.
I worked with Sense international (India) for more than two years and I must say that i have witnessed positive changes coming in lives of individuals and their families, while being a part of its program. Apart from this, I also experienced tremendous growth in my knowledge about deaf blind people. They make sure that each employee understand about this condition, so that they can bring out the best in whatever they do, be it designing a program or training parents or special educators. This makes them the one of the most credible organization that delivers what they intend to. Regular trainings and other educational interventions of their staff, consultants and partner organizations is their key to remain connected and updated about the new researches of the field. Being the only national level organization working on and for this issue, with commendable dedication and enthusiasm, Sense International is surely a bona fide pioneer of its field.
Sense International is a great team doing some amazing work in an area that most people know or understand little about. I have been fortunate in having come in touch with team members like Akhil Paul and Zamir Dhale and feel humbled by the experience.
Sense International has been really making a great move towards uplifting the deaf-blind children. They have transformed the lives of people across India and helped them feel special irrespective of their disabilities. The young & motivating team of Sense International has been taking various initiatives to promote awareness in people to come forward and extend a helping hand for these children. I really feel honored that I got an opportunity to do something for the wellness of society and thanks to Sense International India, who gave me this opportunity. I wish the entire team All The Best.
Sense International India has transformed lives of many deaf blind and blind with additional disabilities in India and their expertise has benefited neighbouring countries too like Bangladesh and even now Malaysia. They have made the difference and created great awareness on the abilities of deaf blind and blind with additional disabilities. They have a wonderful dedicated team.
I have been fortunate to "know' Sense International in some depth, as I evaluated a number of their programmes . It is a highly professional organization, working tirelessly for the rights of deafblind children and adults, and their families. They are pioneers in India in this field but what makes them unique is that they continue to work with the same zeal, honesty and dedication as when they started.
Sense International is working with people who have a dual disability and hence are not seen or heard. It has spearheaded the movement of initiating professionalservices for this group in india and reaching out to thousands of deafblind persons in remote areas. They have pioneered services, created a cadre of professionals and helped several outstanding deafblind persons to be self advocaters and prove their abilities through demonstration. The Organization has young team who is committed, creative and dynamic. I have seen the lives of several young people who are deafblind transformed by the services provided by Sense...these people are seen and heard...thanks to Sense.

I did some voluntary work with Sense India back in 1998 and have been a keen follower of its progress since. What struck me then and continues to strike me now is the incredible impact this organisation has across India. Its staff are tremendously committed to changing the lives of deafblind people and educating the people around them. This organisation is well worth supporting. Supporters can be assured that every penny/rupee/cent will have maximised impact.
Sense International (India) is one organization who not just commits but delivers in every possible way, the way they work toward betterment of future of Deaf-Blind people of India is commendable. I feel really Proud that for these organization i got to "Ran in Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon 2013 "one of prestige marathon & i feel really nice that i ran for them , in someway i was able to contribute my bit towards the awareness. "Deaf-blindness" is a very unique disability & i am really amazed to see with what a great passion & love Sense International India is working so hard for Deaf-Blind people.
I want tell to every one reading this, not just to read & say `wow' `great work' `kuddos' ... but 1 must understand Our 1 Step of Support to this organization is 1 step towards 1 Life .... Support as much as u can .. all we can do is SPREAD THE WORD AROUND .... The JOY Would be spread Automatically ...
Sense International (india) is an organization that is doing unbelievable work bringing light & sound to the deaf-blind people of India. The team at Sense International (India) works selflessly to bring cheer and dignity to these physically challenged individuals. Under the leadership of Akhil Paul, I have seen the organization grow to train & serve this lesser known affliction of DEAF + BLINDNESS. I support & request others to assist Sense International (India) in any way possible.
Sense India supports a unique disability “Deafblindness” working exclusively to meet the needs of deafblind people in India. The organization has been doing a great work and is improving the quality of life and condition of identified deafblind people across the country. One of the most noble act of humanity that one can do is to achieve their purpose of existence and I started with this journey when I got in touch with the team of SENSE India. Little did I know about the intensity of work done by the team which brought almost a paradigm shift in my outlook towards life and people. I thank Sense India for introducing me to this noble work and giving me an opportunity through events, donations and many other activities to do my bit and make a difference.
Sense International India works for persons with deafblindness across the country under the great leadership of Mr.Akhil Paul. Not many people know about this disability and the implications it brings along with it in one's life. It has to be recognized as a separate disability by PWD Act which is possible only because of the efforts put by Sense International India. There is a dedicated, selfless, passionate team of workers who are doing a remarkable work in creating the awareness, developing resources, doing advocacy at local and national level for the rehabilitation of persons with deafblindness.
They are making an impact both at the micro and macro level. I wish to congratulate Mr. Akhil Paul and his team for their work and wish them success in all their endeavours to make more and more positive difference in the lives of persons with deafblindness.
Sense India is run by a great team and addressing a very important and unique cause that requires much care and patience - working with deafblindness. I have met with them and are confident that they will make the difference they seek to create with deafblindness in India and across South Asia.
Sense International India is doing yeomen service for persons with deafblindness -a low incidence dual sensory impairment in the length and breadth of our country through its dedicated team led by none other than Mr.Akhil Paul. A person with deafblindness is often mislabelled as intellectually challenged as he/she may have certain so called "behaviours". Sense International India has shown us that with proper communication, training and exposure to the real world these persons can come in to the mainstream. The work they are doing is commendable and the services that they are supporting are growing in leaps and bounds. With their advocacy, deafblindness will soon be a separate disability in the PWD Act. As a person working with childrena nd young adults with deafblindness ,I have always sought the guidance from the Sense Team and they have been ready to help me.As a trainer of young people to become teachers of children with deafblindness,I have received a lot of support and encouragement from this organization. My hearty congratulation to Sense International India for all their efforts to brighten the lives of persons with deafblindness, their families and the teachers who work for them.May the Almighty bless the team and the team leader and guide them in His path.
Sense does a very specialised service of serving 'Deafblind' people. In fact they were the beginners in the field of deafblind in the country. They not only provided services in different parts of the country and continent but also advocate for leveraging government resources and personnel to make the required changes in the law.
The team and the leadership is amazing. Seen Mr. Akhil Paul, the founder Director very passionately working and has given almost a decade and half towards it.
Well done folks!!!
Keep the flag waving all the time.
Very Best- Gazala- Development worker
I have been a supporter of Sense India for over 10 years. During that period, I have been amazed at the outstanding work that Akhil and his team have performed to improve the lot of the less-fortunate.
I am a parent of a young man who is deafblind. Deafblindness is a unique and isolating disability which requires specialist intervention. I was a trustee of Sense in the UK in 1997 when Sense International was formed in response to the many requests for international support for deafblind people. It was quickly realised that 'country-based' staff were essential and Akhil Paul was appointed. At that time in India only 23 deafblind people received any support but under the guidance and direction of Akhil individuals, communities, NGOs, politicians etc in India have been informed, educated, and persuaded to recognise the potential of deafblind people. Now some 50,000 people receive some form of support via Sense International (India) but that is a small fraction of the estimated 500,000 deafblind people in India. I have met Akhil on many occasions and never fail to be impressed by his commitment to deafblind people and his drive and determination to empower them to change their world.
I was with them in sep 6-8 in 2010 for leadership development confrence in ahmedabad. The organization has explained the needs / actualities of deafblindness. Since then l am watching their work from m place i.e. Hoshangabad.mp and found that they ate totally devoted in the betterment of deafblind people of our country. The efficient leadership of Mr. Akhil Paul has shown path to the group and the entire family of the organiation, its partners, beneficieries, well- wishers and general public all admire them a lot. These kind of organizations should get opportunity to represent , lead and guide to transform the condition of the dprived people. I wish them best of luck for the same.
The very thought of the serious handicap that Deafblindess causes in getting anywhere close to "normal" life made me lose sleep when I learnt about it from my friend Akhil Paul of Sense International (India). I have, since, tried to be of assistance to the cause, via Sense International (India). The work that Akhil & his team are doing is admirable. My best wishes are always with them.
Like most people I had never heard of the disability 'deafblindness'. Somehow Sense India found me out and spoke of their vision to build a strong national organisation to serve deafblind people throughout India. I was inspired by the vision and what I learnt of the commitment of Akhil and his team to make the vision a reality. I joined the Board. Since those early days the achievements of Sense India have been remarkable. Now over 11,000 children receive direct support through a network of NGOs throughout India; and almost 40,000 receive some access to schooling through a government 'inclusive education' programme. To achieve this, community-level workers; carers; and educators are trained with the help of strategic 'Resource Centers' in North, South, East and West India. This work is strengthened by the steadily growing networks of deafblind people, families and educators. All this under National and State Level advocacy work which has led to the official acknowledgement of the Deafblind as a category within the disability sector... remarkable achievement indeed.
Since mid 2012 a strong policy of 'national resource mobilisation' has been established. This year about 40% of income will be realised from within India; and mostly from Individuals. A reflection of the communication skills of the newly recruited team. Communicating the cause of deafblindness is now recognised by Sense India as of equal importance to the 'programme' work. People affected by deafblindness need support from all sections of society. Strong communications makes this possible. An award which supports communications thus plays a vital role in expanding the understanding of deafblindness and building the support which brings the vision of deafblind people becoming an integral part of our society, closer to being achieved.
It was indeed a challenge to start such a service to the category of disability in 1997, which deafblindness was even unheard to the professionals. Also to survive over these years through extending the service to almost all the parts of the Country and supporting more than 57,000 deafblind persons is another herculean task. I am sure that the commitment of the team, the professionalism of the leaders, the support of the parents/educators/family of deafblind helps Sense India to reach this position, which everyone envy on them. All the best.
A strong team with a dedication towards reaching out and being of service to many souls who are clearly in need of their support and training.
akhil paul and his team are true professionals in this field. their work is spread over the entire continuum, right from working at the grass root to the level of policy making, from teacher training to research. They are a source of inspiration for many as their commitment to the field and the enthusiasm with which they work is infectious. We need more n more professionals like that who set an example for others. all kinds of support in whatever form possible should be rendered to them from the govt. and the society....
I have known Akhil Paul from my days with Shishu Sarothi and later at AADI and RCI . Along the way I met and interacted with Sumitra Mishra and was completely floored by Zamir Dhale when he attended a session on youth perspectives during the India Social Forum meeting in Delhi .... I am very impressed by the nature and range of work that Sense International has been doing across the country in impacting policy and changing perspectives of people about 'deaf blindness' .... Being from the North East of India, I am waiting eagerly for them to start their services in the region and hope to see NE on the SI (India) map soon.... More power to Sense International (India) and their efforts at empowering deafblind citizens of India....!!!
Sense International is one (MUST WATCH) NGO working with the persons with deafblindness. They have literally created Revolution in the Country with their efforts to build awareness, advocacy, services, training, placements and build an army of professionals, in fact you name it and they have done it... kind of approach to Establishing the concept of deafblindness. They cajoled the society from all angles for establishing Deafblindness, giving them their dignity, their rights and build equal opportunities for them.
I strongly believe that Akhil and his Team with their best practices, has exhibited to the NGO sector HOW AN NGO NEEDS TO FUNCTION.
They are my ideals And I am the happiest person this year, as finally SEnse International as offered to work with us. We have started working with them and I closely look forward to learn from them and do some good work in the sector.

Sense International (india) has helped me to broaden the horizon regarding working with special needs persons. The unique features of deafblindness are opened to me as I came closer to Sense International (India) and its partner organisations all over the country--an unique opportunity for me to be associated with them. It is a step forward for me to learn about deafblindness and multi-sensory impairment through participation in different workshops organised by Sense International (India).
My daughter Sishn Anand is 17 year old. she is completely Deaf& blind & is studying in Hellen keller institute, Mumbai. She is communicating very effectively with her parents, brother, fellow students & teachers . She is proficient in using the Power Braille at home also. She can also operate the computer independedntly. She is very active in cultural front like dancing, drama & sports also. She is very loving & affectionate girl with social inter-actions.
I came in touch of SENSE before say 6-7 years. I find this organisation very good specially the services this org gives to the DEAF-BLIND and MULTY HANDICAPPED people is signeficant. Of all the services this org gives I like the HOME BASED services to the deaf-blind and multihandicapped people. I think this is the only org which provides home based services to the special people without any charge. I know this type of org always need Funds and Volunteers to serve the people and I suggest a minimum amount should be charged with the people whom you gives services. Ofcourse there are many families which can not afford the charges but a lot of families can afford it and this is the best way to get funds for the org to run its humble services.
It is wonderful, well managed and professional organizaiton. It is well respected by other international organizations, national Government and other stakeholders. It is known for its innovative approaches to promotion of comprehensive rehabilitation of persons with deafblindness. It also very transparent, well managed and well respected.
Sense International (India) has made a quite outstanding contribution to the cause of deaf-blindness in India; and also to other parts of the global network of Sense International. Its' model of direct support to a few organisations to establish specialist units; along with training of staff in the special skills required; and advocacy at the national level on the issue of deaf-blindness, to the extent of the central government and many state governments being aware of deaf-blindness - all adds up to a very significant contribution. Well done.
I was employed with one of the regional learning center of sense international. All my experiences with sense came via my direct employers. What i could say about sense is this that I have always seen people working with sympathy, dedication, emotion and such other values when they are with some "NGO". But sense is a professional, result oriented and an ambitious organisation working sincerely for a cause. It is for sure a positive aspect.. Sense International could be more sensitive if they interact more with the people they are working for.
I first came to know about Sense International after watching a presentation from Mr. Akhil Paul at the national conference on mental retardation in Calcutta in 2004. I've also been lucky to have a classmate in my undergraduate program at NIMH, Mr. Uttam Kumar, who has been on board with Sense International since 2004, as well as Mr. Bikash Das, my senior (and mentor) at NIMH. I'm happy that these highly skilled and dedicated rehabilitation practitioners have been with SI, and speaks a lot about its talented and resourceful workforce. I appreciate the work that SI does to partner with, and enable organizations and personell working with deafblind populations. Deafblindness is an important, but less emphasised disability about which more awareness needs to be spread over the coming years. I'm glad that SI is working towards that goal and wish it the best. In course of my higher education in Early Intervention at the University of Texas and consequent work experience with EasterSeals (Texas) and the Washington DC public school system, I've continued to review research in the area of Deafblindness and Multiple Disabilities. The generation of quality single subject research designs in this area is not as common as other areas, and I anticipate this to be a key area for SI and partner organizations to investigate. I'd also like to share that I have been in contact with faculty at the Univ of Utah, Salt Lake City who are involved in longitudinal studies in the DB area. I hope that research in deafblindness will be seen more in the years to come. With best wishes-- Victor Mukhopadhyay (M.S) Intensive Resourse Specialist (Special Education), Washington DC
Hello, I came to know about this organization from the Net. I asked about the services through email and got a very helpful reply so that we can help kids with disability.
I have known of Sense International for the last 5 years. I participated in a conference they held, and then evaluated one of their internationally funded projects, which gave me the opportunity to visit their project sites across the country. the organisation is a very professionally run one, with an amazingly committed team in place, who work tirelessly for the cause of deaf blind people in India.
Wonderful work done for the children and adult with deafblindness, they also support institutes for training and development of their manpower which may ultimately benefit the children in the long term. we are happy to be associated with sense international India
Sense International (India) is one of the great NGO success stories anywhere in the world. It embraces sound development pronciples (empowerment, local ownership, involvement of key stakeholders, desire to keep improving) and ensures that all decisions are made in the best interests of deafblind people in India. There have been enormous successes in the first 10 years of Sense International (India) - many more services for deafblind people, legislation at a national and state level, networks, representative bodies, accredited training programmes and much more. If all NGOs in the world could model themselves on Sense International (India), there would be a lot less poverty and disadvantage and the world would be a lot better place.
