Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Blind & Visually Impaired Centers, Deaf & Hearing Impaired Centers, Disabilities, Human Services

Mission: Our vision is of a world in which all deafblind children and adults can be full and active members of society. Our purpose is to work in partnership with - deafblind people, their families, care givers and professionals to ensure that everyone facing challenges because of deafblindness have access to advice, opportunities and support. We are the first and only non-governmental organisation to support the development of comprehensive services for people with deafblindness throughout India. We have a focused/ refined objective of supporting deafblindness alone and have not deviated from it even as we take on a comprehensive approach which includes social, human rights perspectives with all available solutions. We are currently transforming the lives of more than 77,500 children and adults with deafblindness which includes more than 63,500 in main-stream schools within the government’s national ‘inclusive education’ programme and about 14,019 receive specialist services through partner NGOs. Over the last 20 years, we have: Increased the number of deafblind people receiving support from just 23 in 1997 to over 77,500 today; Formed the National Network of Families of deafblind people (PRAYAAS), which received the National Award for best parents association; Strategically aligned with the Government of India in their flagship- education programme- Sarva Shiksha Abhiyaan (SSA) for the inclusion of deafblind children in its mandate; Designed and initiated a two year diploma course in Special Education on Deafblindness recognised by the Rehabilitation Council of India. We advocate for the rights of people with deafblindness with the government and the biggest achievement has been recognition of ‘deafblindness’ in the recently passed the ‘The Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016’. For the first time in history of India, deafblindness is recognized as a disability and rights of persons with deafblindness are now protected. Inclusion of vaccination for Rubella under the Universal Immunization Programme is another significant achievement of our advocacy initiatives. We are a member of several Central Government and State level advisory groups. We have been accredited by Credibility Alliance and by Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs (IICA)- National CSR Hub under Ministry of Corporate Affairs. We have been awarded Gold Certification by GuideStar India by GuideStar India Transparency Award in 2016.

Have you come across a child who can neither see, hear and speak? Yes, 3 disabilities together! Can you imagine what and how this child will learn, live and grow, especially when 95% of our learning comes from what we see and hear! Sense India works with such "deafblind" and multi-sensory impaired children and young adults. We are striving to bring meaning into such lives through education, training and support to parents. It is almost 20 years that I have been with Sense India and have witnessed transformed lives through your support so come forward and extend a helping hand.

So a review. I, being just a commoner, am not in a position to review the great work that people of Sense are doing continuously for past 20 years. On one hand I feel really happy as I get to know what actually is being done, as couple of friends who are working there keep sharing, and on the other hand I feel I didn't try much to do something for physically disabled, instead I get myself entangled in stupid day to day miniscule problems of life. Kudos to the entire team of Sense India who are trying to beautify the lives of the most beloved humans of God, A big big Thank to all of you. Kudos to the deafblind people who in spite of facing actual problems of life, are trying hard to give some meaning to their lives.

I have been part of Sense International India from the day of inception. In fact, I was part of the interview committee which appointed the first Director. Subsequently, I was Chairperson of the Board as well. The growth of Sense India is truly unparalleled in respect of its spread, coverage, reach and penetration to remote areas as well. Due to efforts of Sense team, the services for persons with deafblindness are becoming a true reality. What a great achievement that the newly enacted Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016 recognizes deafblindness as a stand alone disability. Similarly, the Scheme of Provision of Assistive Devices to Persons with Disabilities also recognizes deafblindness and allocates resources for provision of need based devices to such persons. The Rehabilitation Council of India, a statutory body, also granted recognition to teacher training course for the teachers of the deafblind. It is all due to efforts of team of Sense India that representatives to this organization are now invited to most national level committees on promotion of various aspects of services for persons with disabilities. The Sense India on the occasion of celebration of 20 years of its meritorious services, has convened a national level conference for the educators. About 400 Special Educators shall be attending this conference. Even 4 months before the conference, it is fully booked and and there in no scope of new registration. Such a fantastic response speaks about the popularity of the organization among the special educators. The organization is well known for its transparency, accountability, statutory compliance and professional approach to all its activities and initiatives. According to me, Sense India is most efficiently managed, well governed and well respected non-profit organization with a clear mandate of providing individual need based services to persons with deafblindness. It is a matter of great honour for me that I have a true witness of growth, progress and success of this organization. It has emerged truly a national level, well spread and well respected voluntary organization.

(Explanation of picture - Thanks to Sense India that Shruti is the first deafblind girl who has completed University Level Diploma in Physiotherapy from BPA School of Physiotherapy.

Sense India is transparent and known for its accountability. As a member of the Board, I get notice for the Board meeting well in advance with agenda. All meeting are conducted in a very professional manner completely in conformity with the procedure laid under the Societies Registration Act. The selection of the Members of the Board is done a in a very democratic and professional manner. The organization is achieving 100 per cent statutory compliance in every respect. The organization is adhering to all the provision of Income Tax Act, Provident Fund Act, Gratuity Act, Indian Societies Registration Act and other relevant Act. For me, it is matter of honour to be first Chairman of the Board and now member of the Board.

I have been working as a volunteer with Sense International India for the past six months. Great team putting up great work together! It is with great enthusiasm that the team comes together to provide support structure and facilities to enable the deaf-blind children to learn activities of their daily learning and other skills. The team also facilitates collection of funding to enable all the support activities. All in all it has been a richly rewarding experience to work with Sense International India and help the deaf-blind children whose world otherwise becomes very limited!

Deafblindness being a unique disability needs specialized focus and intervention. I have been a part of Sense India since 5 years and i must say that lives of Deafblind and family members are transformed . There is a huge difference in saying & doing ,here we believe in doing things. Sense India does not only focus on Educational, therapeutic, vocational intervention, but it also pursues into a adult being an active member of the society through income generation programmes being specifically developed for the adult. over the years i have seen those tears of joy of the parents when their Deafblind daughters & sons hands over the income that they have earned through their business. I am proud to be a part of Sense International India

How many times have we been tired of our kids, who are perfectly normal, scolding them and telling them to be understandable and calm them down, in times when they don't understand stuff or get sick etc.

The guys at sense do these, but the magnitude of the whole thing changes, because the kids can't hear or see. Imagine yourself at a place where you have to explain to a child what is happening to him/her and then to make them overcome the same and to teach them to live a life. Not just children adults too loose their sight and sound and helping the adults to adjust who have become a child once again, who have to forget all that they have learned and have to learn things all again, is another task all together.

Over and above that, many of us may want to help a blind person cross the road, what we don't realize is that some of them cannot hear you, so trying to talk to them is futile, trying to make a deafblind individual explain that this is going to happen to you on the street, is another task.

So Sense working on getting the kids and individual under their wing, trying to educate them, trying to educate the public about them and to make sure the individual rights of these individuals remain intact, is by far no small act. I was stupified and had to collect myself. Their work and efforts and the efforts of the deafblind individual really minuscule things we do.

Sense India works with some of the most marginalised and invisible children of India. Deafblind children face dual disability of vision and hearing loss making their world limited to their fingertips. Sense India is the only national level NGO in India that works exclusively with these children. It provides education, rehabilitation, vocational training and employment to deafblind children and adults.
