Polio struck a million little kids around the world. I was one.
How did most of us succeed and adjust? Because of the force of the family, especially the mothers. I wrote a book about mine after her death, trying to condense 60 years of her life into just 100 pages. I spoke of her ideals, about own adjustments when I became ill and how she encouraged me to pursue all that life offered. She told me to see the world and all it offered. I did.
Many years later, I helped her adjust after she had a stroke, giving her the strength she had willed to me.
I know it is a story that continues to give, helping others who are disabled.
"Giving" does not always entail money.
