Causes: Economic Development
Mission: Sgbn is a network of seattle residents, non-profit and municipal organizations, and local independent businesses dedicated to building a vibrant local economy based on shared environmental and community values. Our mission is to connect and inspire people to buy, produce, and invest locally, so that everyone has a meaningful stake in the local economy and to ensure the local economy furthers the common good by protecting the environment and creating economic opportunity for all to relieve poverty, further education, and foster accountable citizens.
Programs: Dine around seattle is a series of events throughout the year that connect thousands of residents with dozens of locally owned restaurants to enjoy seasonal, locally-sourced menus. The events educate residents about local farms and producers and the importance of a strong local food economy, and contribute millions of dollars to our local economy. They strengthen our community by creating real connections between and among residents and our small locally owned businesses.
seattle made is a collaboration of over 400 local producers and manufacturers working together to provide a more diverse base of living wage jobs, a more fertile landscape for entrepreneurs, and opportunities to reduce the environmental impact of production and distribution while building the region's long-term resiliency and celebrating seattle's unique cultural identity. This includes direct and indirect promotion of awareness and understanding through the seattle area.
community engagement: community and educational events, convening leaders within specific local economy sectors, speaking engagements, and sharing of local economy stories and opportunities through online/email/social media.
community capital: one of the biggest challenges facing our best local entrepreneurs is access to the capital they need to grow their businesses. Traditional bank loans are out of reach for many local businesses. Our community capital program provides a resource website (at commcapseattle. Org) that explores successful models in seattle and around the region for channeling local money into local businesses to build thriving, resilient communities. The website provides information on cooperatives, credit unions and cdfis, direct ipos, crowdfunding, community loan models, and local investor clubs.
