Mission: Ten thousand villages provides vital, fair income to third world people by marketing their handicrafts and telling their stories in north america. Ten thousand villages works with artisans who would otherwise be unemployed or underemployed. The income artisans earn helps pay for food, education, health care, and housing.
Programs: Ten thousand villages operates a retail business, selling products crafted by artisans in developing countries. The organization markets these quality products, which display the richness and diversity of cultures around the world. These handicrafts are purchased at a fair price, giving underemployed vendors the opportunity to provide much needed support for their families. By offering these environmentally friendly products to the north american consumer, we create a unique opportunity to learn about fair trade practices and to appreciate the artisan's cultural heritage. This seattle non-profit partners with other groups to share its mission through community shopping events, off-site sales and other community events. This year included 22 shopping events, 33 off-site sales and 4 main community events (easter event, green halloween, fair trade world fundraiser and the 3rd annual christmas tree lighting). As the recession passes, the organization continues to build its sales and a stronger and ably skilled board and staff. It is also strengthening its marketing plans and educational opportunites for its customers, staff, volunteers, and interns.
