Schmahl Science Workshops' student, Ishan Juluri, has been named to this year’s Broadcom MASTERS Top 300. Founded and produced by the Society for Science & the Public, #brcmMASTERS is the premier STEM competition for middle school students. Congratulations, Ishan!
I have been with Schmahl Science for almost 6 years, and done an independent research project for the last 5 years. I have enjoyed each year so much because of the incredible opportunities and guidance that I've received. All of the mentors I have had have been extremely knowledgeable about their field and make the students project their first priority. They have helped me with research projects in biology as well as engineering. For the first 3 years of working with them, I was able to conduct a variety of biology project ranging from training and testing the cognitive ability of flies that Alzheimer's and tracking levels of particular proteins to being able to testing various natural antibacterial substances to see if they are potential forms of medicine that bacteria can't grow resistant to. This past year, I did an engineering project that was a device that was able to recognize and match particular sound waves to notify a driver of a nearby emergency vehicle. I was very new to the field of engineering but was also very passionate about the purpose of the project. Schmahl gave me the avenue to have introductory lessons to understand the basics as well as the specifics I would probably need for my project. This was immensely useful and I am so happy with the device I was able to create in the end. Each time, Mrs. Schmahl had multiple sit-downs with me to settle on the direction of the project and offer very useful suggestions as well as had countless check-ins to see if there were any roadblocks and always proved great advice to overcome it.
Having the experience of conducting unique science research projects had also provided me with a particular edge that I see will be useful throughout college and in applying for lab positions where I would want to continue my love of research that Schmahl Science has instilled.

I organize the GATE program for our school and we have done several of the Schmahl Science workshops and our kids love them! There instructors are engaging, enthusiastic, and knowledgeable and they do a great job of exciting the kids on whatever topic they are sharing. Several of our students were excited to go home and share their new knowledge with their parents and recreate the experiments to see what different outcome they could get. we have three more workshops scheduled this school year and the kids can't wait! What a wonderful organization!
Overall my children learned a lot through Schmahl's process and from each of their mentors. They are a unique offering in the area through which my children get real hands on science experience. Perhaps private schools in the area offer such opportunities, but public schools offer nowhere close to what Schmahl has to offer. We are very thankful for our relationship with Schmahl Science. The staff are a part of the village that my children are growing up in and I am very thankful for that.
I was a student with the ASRP program at Schmahl. It was a fantastic opportunity to get started in research. I deepened my understanding of science and gained experience with techniques and tools that I know I'll use in future research in college and beyond.
Schmahl Science Workshop is a well-run workshop, that allows students the opportunity to delve into their individual scientific interests, through scientific research and experimentation. The mentors who guide students are very knowledgeable and work closely with the students, to ensure that they understand the scientific research and processes involved in their experimentation. In addition, the administrative staff is very friendly, professional and accommodating – especially at times when they have to schedule students on successive days or on weekends, to meet the demands of their experimental process. SSW does deliver on its mission to provide students with a strong science foundation in a professional and engaging manner, which inspires them to pursue careers in math and science.
