I have been with Schmahl Science for almost 6 years, and done an independent research project for the last 5 years. I have enjoyed each year so much because of the incredible opportunities and guidance that I've received. All of the mentors I have had have been extremely knowledgeable about their field and make the students project their first priority. They have helped me with research projects in biology as well as engineering. For the first 3 years of working with them, I was able to conduct a variety of biology project ranging from training and testing the cognitive ability of flies that Alzheimer's and tracking levels of particular proteins to being able to testing various natural antibacterial substances to see if they are potential forms of medicine that bacteria can't grow resistant to. This past year, I did an engineering project that was a device that was able to recognize and match particular sound waves to notify a driver of a nearby emergency vehicle. I was very new to the field of engineering but was also very passionate about the purpose of the project. Schmahl gave me the avenue to have introductory lessons to understand the basics as well as the specifics I would probably need for my project. This was immensely useful and I am so happy with the device I was able to create in the end. Each time, Mrs. Schmahl had multiple sit-downs with me to settle on the direction of the project and offer very useful suggestions as well as had countless check-ins to see if there were any roadblocks and always proved great advice to overcome it.
Having the experience of conducting unique science research projects had also provided me with a particular edge that I see will be useful throughout college and in applying for lab positions where I would want to continue my love of research that Schmahl Science has instilled.
