Causes: Community Recreational Centers, Sports
Mission: The mission of the roy c. Buley community center is to enhance our community through educational, recreational, and cultural experiences.
Programs: Edge: this after-school program is a phased implementation of a four- year model program based on school, family, and community partnerships, emphasizing the imperative of school readiness and community-based learning for school success. Considering the correlation between achievement level in grade school and later academic outcomes, the program supports children and families in the years from preschool through third grade, with the ultimate outcome of performance at grade level or above in third grade for program participants. During the school year of 2016, 75 grade school children participated in the edge after school program at the roy c. Buley community center (2:30pm - 5:30 pm).
aim: this summer program, in conjunction with the boys and girls club, motivate our minds and the ross center serves children from pre-k through 8th grade. It is specifically geared toward combating summer learning loss, which is pronounced for lower-income students prevalent in the core neighborhoods served by the buley center. Aim focuses first on academic enrichment with a curriculum on the arts, science, technology, and math (steam -- science, technology, engineering, arts, math). Students also participate in active, recreational activities such as swimming and rock climbing. To round out this program, children are provided with nutritious snacks and served lunch while at aim program. (continues on schedule o) teachers for the program are recruited from student volunteers at ball state university and elementary teachers on summer break. The aim program is one of several district-wide efforts to provide academic enrichment opportunities in a community-based environment.
