Mission: The primary purpose of the society is to advance the growth and understanding of contemporary art. Founded in 1915, the society exhibits and promotes artists whose work questions, expands and re-images the aesthetic boundaries of the visual art. The society is a place of discovery and a laboratory of creative experimentation; exhibitions are its core. The society sponsors concerts, performances, film and video screenings, readings and talks with noted artists and critics to provide a meaningful context for the exhibited work.
Programs: Exhibitions and new work productions invites artists to create art for the organization to be displayed in the gallery. Exhibitions can be either an individual artist or a group of artists. There are approximately four exhibitions per year in addition to two newly commissioned performace programs. publications, editions and art. Publications are books created to support the artists exhibiting. In fiscal 2017, 2 books were produced: irena haiduk and ben rivers. The renaissance also produces and distributes editions by contemporary artists, and has sold works of art.
educational events are intended to educate the general public and the university of chicago students. 26 events were held in fiscal 2017 that included 4 walk-throughs with curator, 4 concerts, 5 discussion panels and 3 screenings.
