I have been personally involved with the Project for 3 years. I am on of the men who drive the vehicles around the country giving presentation to Jr High Schools and High Schools. The reception of the Program by the School Staffs and Children has been over whelming at every city and town I have stopped at. I was amazed as to the amount of retired FDNY members, who after learning about our current location, came out to view, talk and share with us some of their most private memories of 9-11. Many were assigned to R4 &/or R5 at sone point in their career. Some lost loved ones on 9-11. Sons, cousins and fellow FDNY brothers.
Each one told us how their emotions ran when they saw R4 or R5. But, in some way, it helped bring a piece of calm to their heavy hearts. Each one was 100% behind the Project and offered their assistance if ever needed.
On several occasions, after viewing the program, they would leave and return with their wives, children and even grand children and relate to them, their feelings or stories on what the Vehicle means.
This is a Project that is an ever so important piece of "Never Forget the 343"
I never imagined the reach and impact the Project would have in such a short time. It is fascinating to see the true essence of humanity and a wanting to just do good by so many people. I have seen generosity and support across the country that is unparalleled. It has been a humbling experience to interact with family members of the those lost on Sept. 11th and when the word "thanks' is given, I have been taken back at times because we are just doing what should and needs to be done. As firefighters, it is imperative to make sure that everyone understands and remembers the sacrifices made by those lost of Sept. 11th and all firefighters killed in the line of duty each year. This Project helps to bridge the gap for people across the country to be able to learn, honor and remember.
