Mission: The registry of interpreters for the deaf, inc. Promotes excellence in the delivery of interpreting services among diverse users of signed and spoken languages through professional development, networking, advocacy, and standards.
Programs: Certification: rid's certification program is responsible for awarding national certification in generalist and specialist areas of asl interpreting. The certification program awards credentials to individuals who have achieved specific standards set forth as required. These standards act as assurance to consumers of the minimum level of competency they can expect from the interpreter holding certification. Certification is held as long as individuals meet recurring criteria for maintaining membership and earning ongoing continuing education hours. At the end of fy2017, there were 10,324 individuals holding rid certification.
meetings: rid conducts a biennial conference where members and stakeholders meet to conduct the business of the association. Additionally, continuing education workshops and professional discussions are offered, alongside research presentations and other professional development for the interpreting profession. In fy2017, rid did not hold a biennial conference.
member services: rid is a professional membership association for members of the sign language interpreting and transliterating profession. Rid provides members with benefits and services that support the achievement of excellence within their profession, such as a quarterly professional publication, an annual interpreting research journal, standard practice and white papers, discounts of books and services, and volunteer leadership opportunities. At the end of fy2017, there were 14,752 paid members across eight (8) membership categories.
RID has done a lot of good work over the years. The current leadership claims to be transparent but is not. The President always responds defensively to every comment by a member. I wish the President would listen and acknowledge the concern instead of arguing with everyone who wants to make a comment.
