Mission: The "Recreation Advocates, Inc." was originally called the "Watsonville Parks & Recreation Advocates", until April 2000. The Advocates were started in 1983 by the Watsonville City Council to help supplement the City budget cuts to the Recreation Department. The Advocates were to voluntarily assist the Rec. Dept. with fund-raising and other activities and events.
Originally the Advocate Board Members were elected by the City Council and were restricted to the needs of the City Recreation Department. As of April, we are no longer governed by the City Council and have expanded our assistance to the residents and visitors of the City of Watsonville;
just not those affiliated with the Recreation Department. We have never received any monies from the City of Watsonville. We have always relied on fundraisers or donations.
