Mission: The r20's mission is to help states, provinces, regions and other subnational governments around the world develop, implement, and communicate low-carbon and climate resilient economic development projects, policies, and best practices.
Programs: Brazil lighting project - r20 usa is partnering with technology providers to implement led streetlight projects in a number of brazilian cities with which it has signed memoranda of understanding (over a dozen cities thus far). The project focuses on switching out inefficient streetlights for energy efficiency streets lights, which will save money and reduce ghg emissions. To support the effort the r20 released "the next generation of street lighting: a feasibility study for rio de janeiro" which outlines a blueprint for implementing led street lights in rio and serves as an example for other cities in the region.
china program- r20 usa has been working with a number of regions in china on helping to identify and implement low carbon projects. For example r20 staff has held meetings with the low-carbon city of shenzhen, a member of the r20. Staff met with officials from the national development and reform commission (ndrc), the authoritative body that oversees the entire chinese economy in 2014 to discuss r20's holistic and "from-the-ground-up" approach, its waste-to-energy and energy-efficiency projects in east africa and brazil, as well as its innovative financing model. R20's initiatives in china have attracted attention and gained strong support from the chinese central government, which is also keen to explore opportunities with r20 for south- south cooperation. R20 is working with shenzhen and other regions on a number of feasibility studies to explore renewable energy and waste reduction projects. Finally, discussions with shenzhen officials have included options for building a r20 hub for training and technical assistance in the field of zero waste and waste to energy. R20 has also been working with chinese officials on the implementation of a public awareness campaign "act now! " that enable the general public to install led lights in order to reduce energy consumption and lower ghg emissions.
nigeria program - r20 usa has been working with government officials in delta state, nigeria in an on-going program to assist the state with building its green economy. Specifically the r20 has been working on identifying opportunities related to the implementation of solar photovoltaic technology (potentially at a local airport) and the best possible site for a 50 mw solar pv power plant that would be connected to the national grid. R20 usa is also working with several ministers and stakeholder groups to understand and gather information about institutional water heating needs the state hospital in agbor, where hospital staff wants to lower the consumption of electricity by using solar thermal water heating devices to heat water. R20 usa helped to assess the current waste management situation in delta state and has produced a detailed analysis about the situation, with recommendations for household waste collection, composting, recycling and potential waste-to-energy options.
