Mission: Project step's mission is to identify musical talent in underrepresented children and provide them the opportunities they need to reach their musical potential. Project step provides all of the training opportunities, tools and access necessary to enter conservatory and the field of classical music. Project step uses music as an agent of social change. It identifies musically talented african-american and latino students at an early age and provides them with a comprehensive music program that prepares them to compete at the highest levels. Project step's goals are to expand the lives of our students through music, helping them reach their potential, and to bring diversity to the classical music field. By teaching the values of responsibility, perseverance and joy in achievement through learning a string instrument, project step develops strong, productive and happy adults. The organizaiton was one of twelve recipients of the national arts and humanities youth program (nahyp) award in
Programs: Main program: weekly program of private lessons, chamber music coaching, orchestra and theory classes. This year the program included approximately 50 students ages 6 to 18. 100% of the program's graduates have gone on to college or conservatory. Aprroximately 60% of the program's graduates are currently professionals in the field of classical music. Students have won awards and been on national television and radio.
focus program: weekly, three-hour classes for five year old children that teaches the basics of rhythm, pitch and melody in prparation for the main program. This year the focus program served approximately 50 students.
