Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Child Abuse Prevention, Crime & Law, Domestic Violence, Protection Against Abuse

Mission: Children don?t report their own abuse. (Fact: Of the 3 million cases reported each year, less than 300 are reported by the child.) Physical abuse is reported most frequently because it is visible. Sexual abuse and neglect are rarely reported. Researchers estimate that 6 million cases of abuse go unreported each year, either because of they are afraid, ashamed, or simply don?t know who to turn to for help. Project Nightlight is working to make children more comfortable with talking about and reporting abuse and getting help. Our mission is to:1) Remove the negative social stigma felt by the abused child. We want to give children the confidence to speak out against their abuse instead of hiding it because they are ashamed. 2) Explain the social care process that occurs once abuse is reported. The more children know about the process, the more confidence they have in the system and the more likely they will be to report their abuse. 3) Educate children on ways to access the resources available that can assist them in coping with abuse even if they aren't ready to report it. Such as support groups and confidential hot lines. 4) Help children overcome feelings of isolation by showing them that they are not alone, other children are also victims of abuse?children just like them.
