Mission: The poetry society of america, the nation's oldest poetry organization, was founded in 1910. Its mission is to build a larger and more diverse audience for poetry, to encourage a deeper appreciation of the vitality (continued on schedule o)and breadth of poetry in the cultural conversation, and to place poetry at the crossroads of american life.
Programs: Public programs:national poetry eventseach year the psa presents a national series which brings programs exploring a large theme such as regional poetry, poetry and politics, or black iconic poets, to 4-6 of our key cities. This series consists of large, public poetry programs and smaller discussions, co-produced with local partner organizations. Most of these events are free of charge, to ensure that the widest possible audiences have the opportunity to experience them. Additionally, audio recordings of many events and additional original feature content are available on our website, www. Poetrysociety. Com, where they are accessible to poetry-lovers nationwide. Local poetry eventspsa continues to partner with select nyc cultural institutions and educational venues to present unique poetry programs, with the goal of including as many new yorkers as possible. Our signature new salon series, in which poetry readings by respected poets are followed by in-depth interviews about their work, takes place in universities throughout the city. Events in public and outdoor spaces such as brooklyn borough hall, at the new york botanical garden, times square, grand central station, as well as large celebrations of poetry in cooper union's great hall, bring poetry to large, diverse audiences throughout the city.
psa emerging writers chapbook fellowship:each year, psa awards 4 emerging writers a fellowship designed to support and advance their professional development in the field through editorial support, publication, exposure, and an introduction into the literary community. Winners are selected by distinguished poets, and psa staff work with them to edit and arrange their poems into a 20-30 page chapbook, which is printed in an edition of 500. The volumes contain an introduced by the selecting judge. The books are launched at a public reading at the festival of the chapbook in new york city. Founded in 2003, this program has now introduced 52 new voices.
poetry in motion:since 1992, poetry in motion has placed poems in transit systems of cities throughout the country, helping to create a national readership for both emerging and established poets, to provide individuals in diverse communities' exposure to the art on a daily basis, and to raise awareness and deepen appreciation of the art form. Poetry in motion is one of the most popular and well known literary programs in american history, and has been widely replicated. The number of people viewing poems every day on transit systems is currently estimated at around 7 million.
annual awards:the psa offers 12 awards, and over the past 100 years, these awards have been given to both established and emerging poets. Recipients have included countee cullen, langston hughes, marianne moore, e. E. Cummings, elizabeth bishop, marie ponsot and sonia sanchez. The awards honor every stage of a poet's artistic career, from a single poem written by a high school student, to a first book, to lifetime achievement.
