Causes: Community Foundations, Philanthropy
Mission: Mission: the philadelphia foundation is in the business of "building community" through: building philanthropic resources; managing those resources well; distributing those resources effectively; and improving the quality of life for all in the region. The philadelphia foundation fulfills that mission by: convening, leading and supporting; and focusing on vulnerable populations, our donors and the nonprofit sector. Vision: the philadelphia foundation envisions a flourishing delaware valley made up of safe, thriving and diverse communities, strengthened by a dynamic and robust nonprofit sector that is critical to our quality of life, and that inspires civic participation through philanthropy. Values: we achieve our mission based on certain values that are paramount to all that we do. They are (in order of importance): trust, hope and efficiency.
Programs: 1) philanthropic resource development: the philadelphia foundation serves as the vehicle for philanthropic giving in the community offering many types of giving opportunities for individuals, nonprofits, corporations, foundations and professional advisors. Donors have a wide array of charitable funding opportunities including donor advised, field of interest, discretionary, scholarship, designated, and agency funds through direct contributions, bequests, charitable gift annuities and other trust arrangements. Thirty- three new charitable funds were initiated in 2014. Gifts to new and existing funds totaled $16,631,775. See schedule o for continuation2) financial management of assets: the foundation invests contributed assets in a wide array of investment opportunities and maintains individual balances in each of its 967 funds. Asset balances will increase/decrease based on realized and unrealized returns on investments. Tpf's asset base increased in 2014 to $349 million. 3) grants and scholarships: the foundation distributes philanthropic dollars to the community in the form of grants based on the intent of the donor when established. The foundation awarded 1,971 grants and scholarships for a total of $21 million, supporting over 1,200 community-based organization and educational institutions. 4) discretionary grantmaking strategy: the philadelphia foundation is committed to improving the infrastructure and capacity of the nonprofit community. To fulfill this goal, the foundation awards capacity building and organizational effectiveness grants to the nonprofit community as well as provide direct technical assistance in the form of workshops. 5) art exhibits: tpf connects community arts groups with patrons of the arts through two art gallery exhibitions per year in the foundation's office. 6) administration of initiatives: tpf is also responsible for the implementation of a mentoring/coaching literacy program, funded by the annenberg foundation, to develop literacy skills for teachers in school districts throughout the state of pennsylvania.
