Causes: Developmentally Disabled Centers, Disabilities, Family Services, Health, Human Services
Mission: To support georgia families and individuals from birth to 26 impacted by disabilities or special health care needs
Programs: Parent training and information center (pti-080): this program offers help to families with early intervention, education, and transition systems and services. This program is designed to enable families to receive training and information on their rights, responsibilities, and protections under individuals with disabilities education act (idea), so they can actively participate in planning and decision making that affects their children and their children's future. It is desired that children with disabiities & their families are given the tools needed to meet developmental goals and be prepared to lead productive, independent adult lives, to the maximum extent possible. Families can use regional coordinators, the parent to parent website available in several languages, and volunteer parent to parent trainers. In 2016-17, there were over 5,267 assistance calls including over 4,000 calls related to education assistance; 700 families received intensive specialized assistance in school issues; over 80 new volunteers trained as parent to parent supporting parents.
central directory services/special needs database (dph-022): this program offers a comprehensive resource database containing over 5,000 resources in over 150 categories for families to conduct searches. The special needs database is a user-friendly, accessible system of contact information for individuals with disabilities, their families, and professionals throughout georgia. Program coordinators are available to assist individuals via telephone. In 2016-17, nearly 19,000 searches were conducted by parents and professionals; and over 3,700 resources were added and/or updated to the database. Our website received over 107,000 pageviews, and our roadmap to success another 30,000. Over 3,900 families follow us on social media and close to 7,600 receive regular email communication from p2p.
regional technical assistance for parent centers (rptac-085): parent to parent provides assistance directly to 19 other nonprofits across the southeastern united states. Work focuses on increasing centers capacity to manage their work, reach more parents and youth impacted by disaiblity, and help improve outcomes for children. This technical assistance includes: webinars, regional trainings, and one-on-one assistance. It also includes intensive topical work and networking opportunities for these centers to learn from each other. In 2016-2017, we provided intensive work on human resource issues around harassment and discrimination, as well as understanding financial statements. We provided onsite assistance to centers in arkansas, oklahoma, and texas. We provided a regional conference that focused on board governance, human resources, and education specific issues.
