Causes: Mental Health, Mental Health Disorders
Mission: The josh anderson foundation (jaf)'s mission is to provide adolescents with the mental health education, resources and support so they will never turn to suicide. Suicide is the third leading cause of death among those ages 15-24. In an effort to prevent suicide among adolescents, the josh anderson foundation provides tools for teens to change their school culture around mental health to be one that encourages help-seeking behavior, social connectedness and the development of healthy habits and coping skills, all of which are protective factors to suicide prevention.
Programs: In the fiscal year ending 6-30-17, jaf developed a new and primary program, our minds matter (omm). Realizing the opportunity to further the scope of mental health promotion and deepen its impact on student's mental wellness, jaf developed the omm program in the summer 2016. Omm is a student-led club model which equips students with the resources and tools to change their school culture around mental health. The primary component of this program is a user-friendly website (www. Ourmindsmatter. Org), which makes accessible to high school staff and students all resources and program activities necessary to make a positive impact on their school culture's mental health. Omm activities focus on increasing help-seeking behavior, promoting social connectedness and encouraging the development and use of healthy habits and coping skills among students. In the fiscal year ending 6-30-17, jaf had spread the club-model to eight (8) high schools and in the fiscal year ending 6-30-18, jaf had spread the club-model to thirteen (13) high schools.
