Mission: Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a genetic disorder characterized by bones that break easily, often from little or no apparent cause. A classification system of different types of OI is commonly used to help describe how severely a person with OI is affected. For example, a person may have just a few or as many as several hundred fractures in a lifetime. For a person with OI, a cough or a sneeze can break a rib, rolling over can break a leg. The Osteogenesis Imperfecta Foundation, founded in 1970 as a national network of volunteers hosting support groups for people with OI and their families, has a dual purpose of funding research to find a cure and providing support to people with OI and their families.
