Mission: To be philadelphia's professional producer of quality grand opera, producing a diverse range of repertoire featuring international artists alongside rising young singers, and to produce educational programs which nurture the future and relevance of the art form.
Programs: During this fiscal year, opera philadelphia produced 22 fully-staged performances of 5 operas - including presenting three operas concurrently, in a mini festival format, for the first time in its history in september 2016 - for approximately 32,686 attendees. The company also held the annual free-to-the-public event opera on the mall, a broadcast performance of "turandot," at independence national historical park. Registration for the event totaled 14,264 and the event attracted new audiences, with 81 percent of attendee households having never purchased a ticket to opera philadelpha programming.
education and outreach efforts: sounds of learning, an art-integration program, uses opera to enhance the core curriculum, focusing on title 1 schools. In fy17, the program reached 8,776 students and teachers through dress rehearsal attendance and classroom programming. T-voce, the company's city-wide youth choir for students with little access to the arts, had 42 participants. The company also held community concerts that reached 1,185 attendees.
composer-in-residence program: the season commenced with the world premiere of "breaking the waves" by composer-in-residence missy mazzoli. It received national and international acclaim, was nominated for best world premiere at the 2017 international opera awards, and received the inaugural best opera award by the music critics association of north america. 2016 also saw rene orth appointed as the company's sixth composer in residence, joining fellow composers david hertzberg and david t. Little in the program. Mr. Little's three-year residence concluded at the end of the 2016-2017 season.
