Mission: The organization's purpose is to promote a greater appreciation of new york city's built-environment; broaden public awareness by exposing a diverse audience to distinctive examples of architecture, engineering and design; educate and inspire discussion of issues of excellence in design, planning and preservation; and showcase outstanding new work and buildings and structures of historic merit.
Programs: In 2017, the 15th annual ohny weekend took place on october 14 and 15,2017, in neighborhoods throughout new york city's five boroughs. Fromiconic landmarks to historic homes, to commercial office buildings,ohny weekend opened more than 250 of new york's most architecturallyand culturally significant buildings for public tours and talks with architects, planners, city officials, historians, and others. Ohny weekend is a vital civic platform for engaging a broad public in a conversation about the importance of architecture and urban design to shaping our experience of the city. 1,200 people registered to volunteer for the 2017 ohny weekend, and ohny estimates that more than 75,000 visitors attended one or more sites during the course of the two-day festival. In addition to the annual ohny weekend, open house new york alsoorganized more than thirty public programs over the course of the year. These included tours and talks part of thematic series like "getting to zero: new york + waste,"which explored the infrastructure of new york's waste system. Additional programs included a conversation series with leading thinkers from science, media, art and design about life in the contemporary city. Ohny also continued its projects in planning with architects and developers speaking about new large-scale projects in the early stages of design and development; presentations included twa hotel, queensway, and others. Additional programs included boat tours up newtown creek and new york harbor; and a scavenger hunt themed around architecture and development in new york since 2003, to mark the 15th anniversary of ohny weekend.
