Programs: Provided appellate and post-conviction legal representation and support services to more than 300 indigent clients.
oad promoted pro bono opportunities. Through its volunteer appellate defender program (vad), oad offered opportunities for associates at many of new york city's private law firms to handle an appeal pro bono under oad supervision. Volunteers participated in a comprehensive cle-accredited training program and worked closely with an oad supervisor. During fy 2017, approximately 35 attorneys participated in the vad program.
see schedule o. Oad teaches a clinical class for new york university law students. As part of this program, nyu law students represent, under the supervision of an oad supervisor, an oad client on appeal. The second component of the clinic is a weekly seminar on appellate advocacy. In fy 2017, 8 students participated in the nyu program. Oad is devoted to maintaining and training a staff of lawyers with diverse backgrounds and experiences. The office attracts some of the most outstanding young lawyers in the nation and every oad staff member shares a profound commitment to defending the underdog and to public service. Many of oad's staff attorneys have clerked for prominent judges in the federal or state courts. Oad also employs distinguished law graduates straight out of law school and lawyers with non-judicial post-graduate experience.
