Causes: Arts & Culture, Performing Arts Schools
Mission: To educate, entertain and enrich the lives of young audiences by running a year round theater school for children, producing plays for children, family and schools and providing theater residencies in area schools to augment school curriculum.
Programs: Entertain: the organization produces four to five professional main stage productions season. Featuring a mix of classic family favorites and world premiere adaptations, the organization's 2016-17 season of plays served over 50,000 children, parents, students, and teachers. 2017 also marked the completion of the organization's project to create new adaptations of the classic fairy-tale cannon, with a focus on removing and replacing harmful gender stereotypes present in the original works. Increasing access to the arts: the organization offers school matinee performances for all of its productions at a dramatic discount ($6-10 per school matinee ticket as opposed to a $23 for a public performance). Half of all title-1 school tickets are donated outright. In 2017, the organization donated $13,600 in school matinee tickets, and over $50,000 in free tickets to our preview performances, distributed through relationships with over 150 social service organizations.
educate: northwest children's theater and school provides the largest theater arts school in oregon, offering year-round classes and camps for children ages 3-18. Afterschool skill classes, playlabs, and school break camps serve over 3,000 students each year at the organization's historic nw portland home. Children receive instruction from working theater professionals in a diverse range of skills including shakespeare, musical tehater, scene study, voice & dance, improvisation, comedy and film & video. Advanced acting students with a special passion for theater may graduate on to one of the organization's five pre-professional training programs: studio jr, kids company nw, studio nw, interns nw, and summer intensive. Enrich: the organization offered educational outreach to 80 portland area schools (22 of them title-1 schools) in 2015-16, serving over 900 students and offering 1,381 hours of theater instruction and school play suppport.
