Mission: To promote, through mutual cooperation of its members, the intelligent and orderly harvest of groundfish species in the bering sea, aleutian islands and gulf of alaska trawl fisheries off alaska; to reduce waste and improve resource utilization in the fisheries; to reduce the incidental catch of non-target species in the fisheries; to promote the adoption and continued support of resource utilization; to attend north pacific fishery management council meetings from time to time, and to summarize and disseminate information regarding the same; and to facilitate scientific research and publication concerning north pacific fishing issues, particularly those related to the commercial fisheries of the bering sea, aleutian island, and gulf of alaska areas.
Programs: We promoted the efficient harvest of pollock under the american fisheries act by harvesting 59,521 metric tons from our assigned quota of 59,534 metric tons.
we participated in the american fisheries act salmon bycatch limitation program by voluntarily remaining outside areas with high salmon bycatch in the bering sea.
we participated in the development and use of new fishing trawls that would allow salmon to escape before the net is brought on board.
we limited halibut bycatch in the pacific cod fishery by returning all halibut to the ocean with a minimum of handling.
