Causes: Community Coalitions
Mission: North end woodward community coalition is a citywide transit justice coalition with a focus on education and issues around transit justice principles: that transit is affordable, accessible,available, safe and reliable especially for those who are transit dependent. Newcc seeks to provide a platform for those who have been"deliberately silenced and intentionally unheard. " we insure that there are both digital and media justice principles in our work.
Programs: North end woodward community coalition, a transit justice coalition organized to insure transit is" accessible, available, affordable, accessible to those who are transit dependent, safe and reliable for all. Organized in 2010 as a neighbor coalition grew to a citywide coalition. With a focus on training, in 2015 received a license from the fcc to construct a low power community radio station. We are soon launching 96. 7 fm a 58 watt station. Program service accomplishments include building a low power station in detroit, installation of solar lighting in the north end as a safety measure due to the removal of municipal lighting in the community and the providing of internet access to 50 low income homes as part of a three organization implementation program.
established a community wireless mesh network. This network is part of a three community project to address the digital divide within community. Currently in detroit 40% of individuals have no access to internet. This creates an inability for many services and benefits to these individuals. Internet is not a luxury but a necessity within today's world.
