i applied to adopt a dog thinking they would be tripping over me to get a pitbull out , instead i was turned down all cause i dont have a strong history of having my dog on heartworm prevention, when my dog tested negative for it and is in heartworm prevention. I walked into Detroit animal care and control and got a dog in a hour and now its lounging in my bed while the pitbull i tried to adopt there is stuck in a cage, please do not ever give these people a dime!!!!

"Anti cruelty" is the least this place has ..! No one should take any animal to this "SLAUGHTERHOUSE". I gave food to a stray cat who came to my yard pregnant, she had 4 kittens... I took care of them and fed them in my yard for 6 months but I moved out of town and couldn't take them with me... the next day after leaving them I called to retrieve one and they had KILLED ALL OF THEM....!!! HEALTHY AND NON-AGGRESSIVE CATS.. I left a good donation for the work I thought they did to accept animals and find them homes...I am so sorry for both....This place should be CLOSED...!!! Never go to this place Never donate a penny, They don't deserve it...!!!

I got my dog from MACS 4 years ago. They work with all types of animals and help as many as possible. They provide affordable vet care to those that need it, too. They are lifesavers and I give to them as often as I can.

Do not use this place. Anti cruelty my ass. Heatless. These mother fkers killed my cat 4 hours after I dropped him off. They said that they could not get him to calm down and that he attacked a worker. But never in his life did he attack anyone he was probably just scared in a new environment and they decided to put him to sleep instead of calling me bk to get him or even just put him ina room alone till he gets relaxed and used to the new surroundings. But no this anti cruelty place killed my cat and threw him away like garbage these heartless people . I just called a few hours later to check on how he is doing amd they said they put him to sleep. This place is amazing. I took my furbaby dog to an emergency care. Found out she had to have her spleen taken out due to a large tumor. They were going to charge me $3700. I was heart broken because I knew I couldn’t afford that. The exam alone cost me $500. I left there sad a very worried about my baby. A friend suggested the Michigan anti cruelty. I went there and they only charged me 470. Thank you for fixing my baby

My family have adopted animals from Michigan Anti-Cruelty Society since I was 11 years old. Now that I am married and have my own family we still adopt from them. Since my husband I have been married we have adopted we have adopted 7 furry daughters from MACS. We have love each and every one. The staff has always helped us find just the right fit for our home and family. Thanks MACS for everything you do.

I have been a foster mom for kittens for almost 20 years. I have also "failed" several times, adopting some of these foster kittens to be my own. The shelter has always been very caring, responsive to needs, and devoted to the welfare of the animals. They are willing to take any animal, and the needs of the animals are their top priority. That, to me, is the most important thing about any animal shelter--putting the needs of the animals first.

Over the years my family has adopted from Michigan Anti Cruelty Society. Almost everyone in my family has, at one point, adopted from them. MACS is one of the first places my grandmother would check when it was time for her to adopt a new friend. I will never forget the day I adopted my cat (C.C., previously Voodoo via her foster family) from an MACS event. I had been wanting a cat for quite awhile and begged my parents to let me adopt one. When I saw the "adopt here" and they saw that it was them doing adoptions, I KNEW I would get a cat because my parents were familiar with who they were, we knew the good they did. I had that cat from the time I was almost 15 till I was 31. Our first dog Tiffany came from a foster family that worked with Michigan Anti Cruelty Society. Tiffany was found wandering I-96 until some kind person took her into MACS. They found her a foster home to stay in while she waited for her forever home. We were that forever home. She went from a dirty skinny stray to a beautiful, healthy and very much loved (especially by the neighborhood children) family member. MACS does good things, they have AMAZING foster families who take in cats, kittens and dogs. These people give of their time, part of their lives and so much of their hearts to do this job. They don't do it for the praise, they do it to find homes for these animals who have none.

My wife and I have adopted two cats from Michigan Anti-Cruely Society and they are the light of our lives. The shelter really cares about who is adopting their animals and that the animals are healthy and happy. What a great organization. We’ll definitely be back!

I have seen this team take on the cases that were turned down by countless other organizations. There are no limits to their generosity and good will towards others.

This shelter takes in all animals , they don’t get to pick and choose like no- kill shelters . They truly serve our community and care about all the animals they take in . Also when a dog is suffering they humanly put it down instead of begging for money . Something all to common with rescues thinking of themselves rather then the dog .

14 years ago my wife and I attended an adoption fair in Utica for MACS. We fell in love with a black/white border collie named Bear. We decided to go home and make sure we were ready to adopt a dog. Once we had decided we were ready Bear was nowhere to be found. It turned out that Bear was with a different rescue attending that day (not with MACS). We checked dozens of shelters/rescues in Michigan, all of them having a black/white border collie named Bear. We had nearly given up hope when the managers at MACS had heard what we were going through trying to locate this dog. They were able to locate the rescue that was there that day and help us get the forms to file for the adoption. Bear is now 15 years old and still going strong.

8 years ago we moved closer to MACS and to repay them for their kindness we became active volunteers and fosters. Thank you MACS for all you do!

How can they be allowed to exist... Please do not donate to them, please do not let their website foul you. They MURDER 80% of the pets that enter that place. Shame on them!!

This place doesn't even deserve one star. They kill 80% of dogs that walk in the doors. They kill based on looks. Dont ever bring a stray dog or cat to them. Michigan anti cruelty society will ask u to sign a owner surrender form instead of a stray surrender form just so they can kill the dog or cat. DON'T BRING ANIMALS HERE AND DON'T DONATE TO THEM. THEY ARE THE WORST

Michigan Anti-Cruelty has the ability so save many lives, instead they choose to kill adoptable animals. They brought in a support committee to help them make changes yet refused to follow through on recommendations – the support committee quit due to M.A.C.S. refusal to give up their outdated practices. While I realize not every animal can be saved, M.A.C.S. does not need to kill animals that have a treatable illness or could be placed in another rescue, home or foster. Before you donate to them I encourage you to look at their financial information and shelter records and compare them to other shelters and rescues – don’t let your donations be used to end innocent lives!

I thought this place was a shelter, that saved animals. Turns out that their own records show all these years of killing...up to 80% of adoptable pets. Talk about not trying at all! Furthermore it appears that breed discrimination, not unlike racism with humans, is a big deal here. As stated in another review, some aren't save able, is an excuse for that woman who hates pitbulls terrier dogs. When in fact almost 100% of people fail to identify that breed and about 30 other breeds correctly. So, seems they must be killing tons of fur babies like labs, and boxers just because of their looks. Seems pretty familiar to how African Americans have been treated.
There is also the problem of the worst record (probably in the whole country) of returning animals to their owners. So that obviously means that if your pet gets out during a car accident, a burglary, or some other accident, and these people get ahold of it, not only are you likely to be told you can't look in their facility, but it appears their must be some fudging of paperwork for 99% of lost pets they get to be killed, but they act like they are doing a service.
And since when do workers come out of their building, assault animal advocate protesters, and not get fired. Then, they accused the vict9 of being the attackers! Well, that's all on video, so after the court date, they will look pretty foolish for continuing to keep these alleged criminal abusers on staff.
It is so unfortunate that this company had offers from 'real', well run, we'll known animal shelter, rescue, and advocates, and they railroaded them all, just to to keep their secrets? We all know how poorly this big money place runs, why not accept the help from those who know what they're doing?
They massive amounts of deaths, probably tens of thousands over all these years, and the minimal efforts they give- seems most effort is put into their commercial style letters to sell themselves, as if they are one of those other, good shelters, to keep the money flowing. Makes you wonder what and where lots of that money has gone over all these years too.
I don't know how their adoption program works, as you really only ever see small dogs being shown on social media as being adopted from there...and since their is only a 1% return to owner rate, makes you wonder if they are giving away someone else's pet without doing diligence to get said pets to their rightful homes? Everything about this place seems funky to me.

Zero Stars. The Director, Manager and Board members need to step down. All of them with 20 to 30 years of shelter experience and they’re the worst performing shelter in the state. And that horrible fact doesn’t faze them. What they are good at (the best) is killing healthy, adoptable animals. 8 out of every 10 were killed last year (see attached report). And MACS has money! Dont know what they do with it, but it’s not going toward ANY effort to save animals. Please stop donating to this death camp. Donate your hard-earned money to shelters that try to save lives, not take them.

Michigan Anti Cruelty Society has the HIGHEST KILL rate of any other facility in Michigan, 8 out of 10 dogs/cats are put into their on-site incinerator (see the black smoke in the photo?).
4,500+ animals are killed there annually.
The facility was offered the assistance of a highly seasoned shelter reform committee with a proven track record, but instead of embracing this help... They turned their back & chose to continue down the same killing path they were on.
They discriminate against pitbull type breeds & have found alliance with the owner of No Place Like Home Rescue of Michigan (Rochester) who is well known for killing all pitbull she can get her hands on!
Conveniently she brings these pitbull type breeds to Michigan Anti Cruelty Society where they offer free euthanasia services to her or anyone else in need... For ANY reason (or no reason).

DO NOT BRING ANY ANIMAL TO THIS FACILITY & DO NOT DONATE TO THEM!

I will never donate to an organization that has leadership that is discriminatory against a breed, and someone who promotes hate against a breed will never get another red nickel from any of our family or friends. They try and package their BS in pretty paper but we see right thru it, and when they kill 8 out of 10 pets something is really wrong with this program. I would be so ashamed to either support or give something that is hell for animals anything but the gory truth, This places needs to go!!!

This place is the doom of death for dogs - strays and owner surrenders. Owners who surrender think they will get them all fixed up for adoption. NOPE. that smoke stack incinerator has been burning since back since i can remember in the early 1980s. The facility is so ancient / archaic , hasnt been updated in decades. They only "keep" the cutesy dogs or kittens. They are not rescue transfer friendly at all. People who surrender their dogs dont know if they are a larger type breed dog, its a death sentence for their animal. Their donations each year, blows my mind from "estates" and in High 100's of thousand of dollars. and this place looks like this still. Watch out for their black van and they go inside their building and that van is full of strays they drive and pick up and they are Killed. Don't think this is not happening folks, because it is. This is NOT A NON FOR PROFIT ORGANIZATION. its a mass murdering establishment and with all the players there, prey on the elderly and their money. NEEDS TO BE SHUT DOWN and it will, time is coming for them. Just cannot happen soon enough for all those animals that are brought into their death building and never leave. They NEVER post on FB sites when a stray is found, or contact actual shelters or animals controls as required by law and don't do the legal stray hold time either before the dog "disappears" These are sick individuals that are on their Board of Directors and very wealthy and its not from adoption fees that's for sure. Its from claiming their Non for profit is benefiting the community and tug at the wallets of their wealthy friends from birmingham, detroit to grosse pointe and Arizona as well. their assets are over 4 million dollars and this place looks like this. so its called a big huge cover up for their members. I MEAN AFTER ALL, BY THEIR NAME, PEOPLE THINK THIS IS A SAFE PLACE TO SURRENDER THEIR DOG. Its not a government ran place either, its privately owned and makes them big money.

This place is a nightmare and needs to be shut down!!!!! I called MHS on a stray Dalmatian. And they sent thewe people out. I specifically asked the driver if he was from M H S and that she was going there. He lied right to my face because it was the next day I called M H S they said dog was at animal control. I couldn't live with myself so I was going to adopt and find her a home. They wouldn't release her stating she was part Pitt bull. She wasn't at all. I've adopted many pitts and they were all wonderful. This place had week old puppies in a cage away from thrid mom. No blankets or even newspaper. I cried and had nightmares for months. There is no reason to kill all these innocent babies. Even Mik e Vic digs were saved and adopted into families with no issues. I wrote to MHS and the Mayor at the time. Please do not bring any fur babies here as it is run by people who really don't are about them. Its a vile disgusting place with soulless people running it and working there.

MICHIGAN ANTI CRUELTY SOCIETY, has been a compassionate shelter for many years. They give out free food, straw, clothing, bedding and provide low fee vet services. They rescue animals, they foster them, they adopt them and especially make sure they have all their vaccinations.
I try to donate on their "wish list" every year because they do such a wonderful job!

How can an entity whose major focus is on liquidating animals (highest number of killed anim a ls in the state of Michigan) continue to generate the amount of donations it does? $900,000 plus from one trust, alone?

People cannot be aware of this, or they also support the murder of over 4500 animals in this building last year. All of those animals being incinerated in the crematorium oven, on site.
People go there to look for their loved one, and they have already gone up in smoke.
They try to make it all cutesy by saying that they give the dogs spam and hot dogs before they put them down. They pat them on the head and tell them they love them.

The directors of this God forsaken place have been there for about 30 years and have perfected the act of taking lives.

When I found out that the MICHIGAN "ANTI"- CRUELTY SOCIETY KILLS 8 out of 10 animals that come in to their facility...THAT was when I decided they will NEVER get another penny in donations from me! I urge anyone & everyone to PLEASE do the same! Why would you want to support & help fund an organization that KILLS animals instead of having compassion & wanting to save their lives like they are supposed to be doing! Why would they even NEED any donations if they are killing 80% of the animals that come in?? They have NO operating expenses, & NO dogs or cats to buy food for, because THEY ARE ALL DEAD FROM THEM EUTHANIZING THEM WHEN THEY CAME IN!! This is disgusting from an organization claiming to be HUMANE, & saving animals' lives. Behind the doors of the MACS are nothing but LIES & DECEIT! The DIRECTOR, who runs things in there, is well aware of it, because the DIRECTOR is the one who agrees with the killing. People who do NOT like animals should NEVER be involved in ANIMAL WELFARE, because the animals DO NOT HAVE A CHANCE to get adopted when they are killed soon after they come into this CHAMBER OF DEATH! I will never support ANY sanctuary or organization that kills animals rather then trying to find them a good home which is why they are organized to do, & collect donations to do. IF you love PITBULLS you will want to boycott this heartless place, because they NOT ONLY do not ADOPT any pitbulls out, but they KILL EVERY ONE THAT COMES IN. IF brought HERE a PITBULL will DIE just because OF ITS BREED! SHAME ON YOU MACS! Nothing will change unless we, the people, speak up, & STOP GIVING THEM MONEY!! Hit them where it hurts...until they make changes FOR the animals, & NOT themselves, OR GET NEW MANAGEMENT WHO CARES! Do not worry about the animals suffering, because there are NONE! You never know what goes on behind closed doors so PLEASE beware when surrendering an animal where you THINK it will find a new home, AND donating your money to a place where you THINK it will go to help the animals!! IF this is what you want STAY AWAY from MACS!

One star is too high of a rating, but zero stars isn't an option. Do not let the name fool you. This organization does not investigate nor prosecute animal cruelty. In fact, they are perpetrators of animal cruelty at the worst level. They deceive the public, donors and volunteers into thinking that they are in existence to help and protect animals, which is the furthest thing from the truth. This organization kills more animals than they save. BY A LOT. In 2017, they killed 400 cats in just the first few months of the year. They do not believe in 21st century animal sheltering. They take in healthy cats just to kill them, rather than neuter them and return them to their homes where they are healthy and thriving. They practice breed discrimination. They are dishonest. When pet owners call for help, they are lied to and told that their animals will be helped. In truth, the animals are killed as soon as they reach the shelter. Join the movement to shut them down. Cut off their funding and do not bring animals there under any circumstance.

Need help?
