Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Arts & Culture, Arts Services, Music, Radio

Mission: The mission of the American Music Center (AMC) is to build a national community for new American music. AMC accomplishes this goal through our three-fold vision -Advocacy: helping make new music accessible to the public; Support: helping artists and organizations thrive; and Connection: making information available to the world at large through AMC's comprehensive new music information services. Founded by a group of composers led by Aaron Copland in 1939, AMC established the model for a national music information and support center that was subsequently replicated throughout the world. AMC advocates for the new music community through NewMusicBox, its award-winning web magazine, and Counterstream Radio, an online station broadcasting music by a broad range of United States composers. AMC supports the community by administering grants to individuals and organizations and by offering professional development programs for artists. AMC connects the community with an array of information services including a searchable online database of some 45,000 works by American composers including the AMC 20th Century Scores Collection at The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts; directories compiling opportunities in new music and other information useful to industry professionals; and benefits and services for our nearly 2,500 members.
