Causes: Arts & Culture, Theater
Mission: The new group is an artist-driven company with a commitment to developing and producing powerful, contemporary theater. While constantly evolving, we maintain an ensemble approach to all our work and an articulated style of emotional immediacy in our acting and productions. In this way, we seek a theater that is adventurous, stimulating and most importantly "now" - a true forum for the present culture.
Programs: 2016-2017 productions:the new group presented four fully staged productions of three plays and one musical: sweet charity, directed by leigh silverman. Evening at the talk house (off-broadway premiere) by wallace shawn, and the whirligig (world premiere) by hamish linklater, both directed by scott elliott. All the fine boys (world premiere) written and directed by erica schmidt. New group/new works, our play and musical development program, produced readings of 25 new plays. Three plays debuted in the inaugural "new group/no limits" series for young playwrights of color. The new group/new works week-long spring reading festival took place 5/30 - 6/2 2017. Our education program included weekly classes through scene offered free to nyc public high school students for 12 weeks and a winter break camp for middleschool students. A free four-week summer camp took place in july 2017. We introduced a free student matinee to nys public high school students to attend the whirligig, and launched "new group now: where art meets our present culture", a free panel discussion of professionals, artists and activists to discuss issues raised in the plays of our season.
