Programs: Nevada public radio (nvpr) is a public broadcasting network comprised of urban and rural community stations serving nevada, california, arizona, and southern utah; knpr, kcnv, klnr, ktph, kwpr, klkr, ksgu, and kvnv, along with a system of 10 translators. Nvpr's service in analog and hd includes the transmission equipment and engineering and technical services as they relate to broadcasting operations and delivery of digital/online content. Nvpr acquires national and international information programming from producers including npr, public radio international and american public media. The flagship stations for the network are las vegas' first and only npr affiliate: news 88. 9 fm knpr and a full time classical service at classical 89. 7 kcnv fm. In april 2017, nvpr signed on new signals in (con't on sch o) reno, nv (sun valley) followed by carson city, nv in july. Nvpr is an active partner with our networks in the shared goals of public media in service to the american public. Nvpr is committed to meeting the information needs of the communities it serves. Annual investment in this area is significant on air, online and in print. Our investments and this role is increasing as traditional news media withdraws from local reporting and origination and audience expectations shift to on-demand delivery on digital platforms. Nvpr produces 7+ hours a week of high quality broadcast news/talk programming and news headlines complemented by online delivery in all platforms. Kvnv (aka nv89) has an alternative music format that champions local artists from nevada. Local artists are featured every hour and nv89 is an affiliate of the video platform vuhaus that combines the efforts of non-commercial music stations nationwide. Nv89 on air, online and through video is a gateway for younger, more diverse audiences to discover both music and public media. In turn nvpr can foster the cultural life of our region in a more meaningful way. The monthly combined broadcast audience is now estimated at 220,000. Our signals now cover 93% of the population of the state of nevada.
nvpr is the publisher of the city regional magazine, desert companion, with an audited monthly readership in excess of 125,000. On air, online and print activities are unduplicated in our region in their public service focus. Nvpr is investing in meeting our audiences "where they are" as media habits shift to digital delivery, and as important, creating content that is relevant to a more diverse population. Nvpr's media output demonstrates a "better than industry" benchmark in reaching non-white audiences (approximately 27% of our audience self-report as non-white in communities where 45% of the community identify as non-white), a goal we seek to maintain and exceed to better reflect the communities we serve. Desert companion hosts an annual photography contest which attracts more than 1500 (con't on sch o) entries annually with a strong showing among the awards from students and amateurs. Events that compliment desert companion editorial attract a younger and more diverse audience than the typical "npr" station event, thus expanding our audience and relevance among a wider demographic that better reflect the vibrancy of the communities we serve.
nvpr's public media services play a vital role in the community life of our region. Through corporate sponsorships we elevate awareness of the corporate social responsibility of some of the nation's most well-known hospitality brands including caesars entertainment and cirque du soleil. In turn, this potentiates the philanthropy of individuals and other business in the region. In supporting nvpr, companies drive awareness of other not for profit entities and their needs. An annual partnership with area food banks (three square and food bank of northern nevada) has resulted in hundreds of thousands of meals donated in lieu of traditional public radio "thank you" gifts. Nvpr's twice annual recycling days yield hundreds of thousands of pounds of recyclables and - critically - hundreds of pounds of (con't on sch o) prescription medications disposed of responsibly. Nvpr donates more than $1m of airtime directly to civic, social service and cultural not-for-profit entities each year. Nvpr websites are a "go to" source for information on community events, a service provided without charge to other non-profits. On air underwriting and print advertising with nvpr is proven in activating audiences to attend cultural events and be involved in their own communities. Our media services are also unduplicated in their ability to connect local companies with their consumers given the demographics of our audience. As marketing partners, we are embedded in the economic success of locally owned and operated companies.
