Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Health, Kidney Diseases, Kidney Diseases Research

Mission: 1 in 9 adult Americans has kidney disease. Most do not know it and many more are at risk to develop the disease. The incidence of the disease is growing at a rapid rate. We want more people to be aware of their kidney health in order to detect any early sign of problems - when there are remedies to prevent or delay serious kidney disease. The two major factors causing kidney disease to double every 10 years: diabetes and/or high blood pressure. Minorities, such as African-Americans, Hispanics, Asians and Native Americans also run a higher risk for kidney disease, due in part to their higher incidence of diabetes and cardiovascular conditions, along with uneven access to preventive health care services. Polycystic kidney disease or 'PKD', is a hereditary condition that is another cause of kidney problems. Again, early detection is vital, particularly if there is any family history of PKD. The MISSION of the National Kidney Foundation of the Virginias is to prevent kidney and urinary tract diseases, to improve the health and well-being of kidney patients and their families, and to increase the availability of all organs for donation. We are a voluntary, not-for-profit health agency and one of 51 affiliates of the National Kidney Foundation, Inc.
