Programs: Convention: last year marked the 44th annual convention of the national flute association. Each year's four-day event, held in rotating cities around the country, features spirited programming for solo and flute choir recitals, master classes and workshops, the nfa's world-renowned competitions, and exhibitions galore. Typically over 3,000 members attend this unique and unparalleled flute extravaganza.

membership: the national flute association, founded in 1972, is the largest flute organization in the world. Members from more than 50 countries join together in person, online, at conventions,informally and in forums, through publications and classrooms, in performance, in friendship and collegiality. Guided by its goals to encourage a higher standard of artistic excellence for the flute, its performers, and its literature, members include leading soloists, orchestral players, jazz and world music performers, teachers, adult amateurs, and students of all ages.

among its 19 total competitions, the nfa sponsors 15 performance competitions to select outstanding flutists to perform at its conventions. Six are for soloist: young artist, piccolo artist, (biennial), baroque flute artist (triennial), high school soloist, conventions performers, and jazz soloist(biennial). Five are masterclass competitions: performers, piccolo (biennial), jazz flute (biennial), baroque flute (triennial), and orchestral audition. Four are for flute choirs: high school, professional, collegiate, and jazz flute big band (biennial). Cash prizes are provided for young artists, piccolo artist, baroque artist, high school soloist, and orchestral audition competitions. In addition, two prizes are awarded to finalists in the high school soloist competition. The first-place winner receives the gilbert scholarship prize, and the finalist who had the best performance of the newly commissioned work is awarded the deveau scholarship. The nfa also proudly sponsors four non-performance competitions and two scholarships among its 19 flute competitions. The annual newly published music competition is for members of the music publishing business community. Also offered are the flute choir composition competition, for composers who write works for flute, choir, flute orchestra and the graduate research competition, for recent master's and doctoral graduates (with two winners invited to summarize their dissertations or other substantial research projects at the convention). The myrna brown international scholarship (biennal) is open to flutists from a "low income" or "lower middle income" country (as defined by the world bank list of econonies) to appear at the convention. The frances blaisdell convention scholarship provides support for a high school or undergraduate student with financial need to attend the convention.
