Mission: Mcasd's mission is to serve diverse audiences through the exhibition, interpretation, collection, and preservation of art created since 1950. Its mandate is to engage regional, national, and international audiences including the binational (continued on schedule o) constituency of the san diego/tijuana region, and its vision is to be a museum providing public access to contemporary art, artists, and the creative process; a forum for the exploration and understanding of contemporary art and ideas; and a laboratory for artists to experiment with new forms of creative expression. The primary vehicle for accomplishing this mission is through the exhibition of contemporary art.
Programs: Mcasd is a forum for the exploration and understanding of contemporary art and ideas that engages diverse audiences, including the binational constituency of the san diego/tijuana region, through the collection, exhibition, and interpretation of art created since 1950. Mcasd's major service accomplishments mirror the organization's mission and include the presentation of special exhibitions, mindful stewardship and innovative interpretations of the permanent collection, and focused educational outreach programs. Fiscal year 2017 was unique in that the museum's flagship location in la jolla was closed halfway through the calendar year in anticipation of its planned major renovation and expansion. During the la jolla closure, mcasd continued to deliver high-quality exhibitions and programming at its jacobs and copley buildings at mcasd downtown. Special exhibitions: this fiscal year, mcasd opened and presented twelve special exhibitions of varying scale and approach. The uses of photography: art, politics, and the reinvention of a medium; delimitations: a survey of the 1821 united states-mexico border; moris: hermoso paisaje 7: los golpes, pan duro y baos de agua fra; papel chicano dos: works on paper from the collection of cheech marin; ruben ochoa: watching, waiting, commiserating; louis hock: a wall; dimensions of black: a collaboration with the san diego african american museum of fine art; jennifer steinkamp: madame curie; tristano di robilant; a step away: artists from the mfa program at uc san diego; andrea chung: you broke the ocean in half to be here; go tell it: selections from mcasd's collection. Of particular significance this year was the deeply researched, historical exhibition the uses of photography: art, politics, and the reinvention of a medium which was accompanied by a catalogue, as well as the museum's thematic permanent collection exhibition dimensions of black. The museum supported the work of emerging artists through the first museum solo exhibition of work by andrea chung.
permanent collection: the stewardship of mcasd's 4900-object collection is a key component of its mission. In fiscal 2017, mcasd increased its holdings with 144 works of art through donation, purchase, and purchase with donated funds. The funds allocated for care of the permanent collection include expenses for preservation and conservation, and this year significant funds were allocated to the care and maintenance of mcasd's iconic outdoor sculpture nancy rubins' pleasure point (2006). In addition, mcasd shared its collection through the loan of 28 artworks to 15 exhibitions at other museums in san diego, throughout california, across the country, and internationally. During fiscal year 2017, museum staff were also engaged in the relocation of the permanent collection as a component of the museum's capital campaign. Funded in part by a grant from the california cultural and historical endowment (cche) for additional storage racks and equipment, staff moved approximately 2,500 objects to their offsite storage facility in chula vista, ca.
educational outreach: mcasd's education programs strive to reach diverse audiences. In fy17, the museum continued its commitment to expanding arts engagement for ethnically diverse millennials in san diego by continuing programming through a grant from the irvine foundation. Mcasd was given the opportunity to again participate in the title i arts grant awarded to the san diego unified school district, by being selected as a partnering institution with hoover high school. A long term collaborator in the extended school partnership program at mcasd, the grant funding that hoover received went to compensating museum gallery educators for in classroom co-teaching, purchasing supplies for the program, and to cover staff costs associated with the logistics of managing this partnership. Long term learning and an effort to bring the experience of the artist directly to the museum's audience combined in a 3-part program featuring acclaimed artists from around the region in the an artist's perspective series.
these are ancillary programs consistent with the museum's mission.
