HISTORY
In 1996, the Morningside Community encountered an increased unemployment rate coupled with lack of training and underemployment rendering its most vulnerable population, single parent families and senior citizens, to the lowest ranks of poverty. Family income for sixty (60%) of the community’s single parent population registered at or below 100% the federal poverty level. Rapid housing decline rendered another 20% of the community’s population to homelessness, vagrant tendencies and malnourishment. Due to lack of stability, the school dropped out rate within the Morningside community’s single parent homes bolstered a significant increase. Communicable disease tripled within the Morningside Community at an alarming rate.
In 1997 in response to these conditions a group of Morningside residents established Morningside Neighborhood Community Development Association (MNCDA) nonprofit organization. MNCDA distributed Thanksgiving & Christmas turkey’s to needy families; provided educational training for children in the community; and to ease financial shortfalls paid utility bills for senior citizens.
In 2014, Morningside Community Development Association obtained its 501 (c) 3 certification. Morningside Community Development provides Resettlement Assistance Services which includes but is not limited to affordable decent housing to low income individuals and families; educational enrichment programs; job readiness/placement opportunities; health information & referral; outreach/prevention and transportation.
