Mission: Mlk-cdc economic development strategies support community health and wellness education opportunities and access to necessary health resources aimed at underserved populations in south los angeles. Its mission is to relieve poverty by combatting deterioration and economic distress through comprehensive community and economic development strategies in the distressed area of south los angeles. Its focus is the redevelopment opportunities offered by the 42- acre mlk medical campus
Programs: The mlk-cdc's mission is facilitating the re-use of the former king-drew hospital that closed in 2007. The 500,000 sq. Ft. Abandoned building will be completely renovated and serve as the new martin luther king (mlk) behavioral health center. The 5-story center will provide enhanced mental health services, urgent care and vocational training. It is anticipated several thousand residents will be served annually once the building is completely renovated.
mlk-cdc's program on the expansion and enhancement of the mlk pediatric clinic (serves 4,000 children in foster care in south los angeles) is focused on relocating the clinic to a new modular building on the campus by the end of 2019. The clinic has been housed for more than 35 years in 50 year-old construction trailers. The mlk-cdc has identified resources for purchase of the new modular building and obtained foundation funding for new furniture and equipment. Once the relocation occurs, it is anticipated that there will be 20% increase in children and teens served in addition to enhanced services provided.
mlk-cdc is working closely with the charles r. Drew university of medicine and science (cdu) located on the mlk medical campus to expand its undergraduate program and improve its administrative and teaching facilities. The mlk-cdc is providing guidance on redevelopment opportunities that will include bio-med labs, new student and faculty housing. It has introduced cdu to potential funding sources and it has facilitated partnerships between cdu and existing health care entities including the mlk pediatric clinic.
