Mission: Mesa community action network (mesacan) has a mission of helping families; changing lives by offering low-income mesa residents financial education and coaching, utility assistance, rental/mortgage assistance, employment development and asset (continued on sch. O) (continued from page 1) building in a one-stop-shop environment through federal, state, and city-funded programs.
Programs: Community action programs provide help to low-income mesa residents facing an economic emergency impacting their housing, health or safety and overall well-being. Mesacan gives financial relief through rent, mortgage and utility assistance and offers case management through financial education, financial coaching and workforce development / assistance. During fiscal 2016-17, 1,280 unduplicated clients were served. Mesacan also served an additional 2,172 repeat clients. Also, financial education/financial coaching, employment development and client case management services were provided at mesacan to mesa residents seeking assistance. As requested, other resources and referrals were provided to those seeking services for basic needs like food boxes, hot meals, health care services, transportation, etc.
weatherization service offers low-income home owners in mesa assistance with home improvements designed to make their home more energy efficient and reduce the cost of utilities. The program provides long-term results by identifying the cause of the high utility bills and repairing those problem areas. During fiscal 2016-17, 55 individuals/families were served.
individual development accounts are savings accounts that offer matching funds to qualifying individuals for the purchase of a home, and to pay the costs of post-secondary education. During fiscal 2016-17, 167 new participants enrolled in the ida program, 249 participants purchased assets, of which $146,679 in matching funds was paid out.
mesacan donated $102,500 bingo operations to a new leaf for the benefit of the east valley men's center, a homeless shelter for men.
