Causes: Mathematics, Technology
Mission: To publish scientific and research literature of the highest quality, both in content and production, at the lowest reasonable cost; to generally improve the scientific-publishing environment that fosters scientific activity; to facilitate, and help others facilitate, scholarly communication and research; and to generally serve the scientific and research communities.
Programs: Publishing its own publications: the organization publishes its own publications, including the research journals "algebraic & geometric topology", "algebra & number theory", "analysis & pde", "communications in applied mathematics and computational science", "geometry & topology", "involve", "journal of mechanics of materials and structures", two open-access book series entitled "geometry & topology mongraphs" and "the open book series", and an open-access web publication "celebratio mathematica". Most of the journals are available on a subscription basis, and their content becomes electronically open-access after five years.
publishing services: the organization performs services for publications which it does not own. It provides all subscription, production, and publishing functions for the "pacific journal of mathematics" (a california non-profit research journal), and for the open access journals "mathematics and mechanics of complex systems" and "journal of software for algebra and geometry. " msp also manages subscription development for the "annals of mathematics," a research journal of princeton university. In 2014, msp has continued producing e-book versions of the multi-volume work "the art of computer programming" by donald knuth, for pearson inc.
software services: the organization provides software-based services for scientific publishing. For its own use, mathematical sciences publishers developed the editorial-workflow software platform called "editflow (r)" which helps manage submissions, peer review, and production of scientific journals. Msp licenses this software to the american mathematical society for managing its mathematics journals and the selection process of the u. S. National security agency grants program in mathematics, and to the london mathematical society (uk) for managing that organization's mathematics journals. The editflow service is also used by select journals from international press of boston, cambridge university press, and the institut mittag-leffler.
