Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Children & Youth, Children & Youth Services, Education, International, International Relief, Preschools, Youth Development Programs

Mission: OneSky teaches communities and caregivers to provide nurturing responsive care and early education that unlocks the vast potential hidden in our world's most vulnerable young children.

Results: To date, OneSky has trained thousands of caregivers to provide life-changing care that has directly impacted the lives of nearly 170,000 at-risk children and indirectly, millions.

Programs: Founded in 1998 to provide care for institutionalized children in China, OneSky is now working toward large-scale, practical application of its innovative yet proven early childhood intervention models in multiple developing countries. OneSky's early intervention models address the needs of at-risk children in a variety of circumstances, including China's "economic orphans" whose parents leave their impoverished villages to find jobs in faraway cities and Vietnam's children of factory workers whose parents cannot find quality daycare during their long hours at work.

I can not overstate the impact that OneSky (Half the Sky) had on the lives of my two daughters, both adopted from China. During their first 18 months of life, lived at two different orphanages in two different provinces (Sichuan and Hunan), they both had the love, affection, and care of their "special nannies" from Half the Sky. We will forever be in their debt. They taught our daughters how to love, how to trust, and how to bond with a loving, caring adult. I do not hesitate to say that our younger daughter may not have survived if it weren't for Half the Sky. She was born with a severe cleft lip and palate, and her orphanage struggled to feed her and keep her healthy. We know that if it weren't for her Half the Sky nanny, her chances of survival would have been minimal in such a poor orphanage in a small Chinese city.We love OneSky, and we will forever be in their debt for the lives they gave our daughters before they became part of our family.Laura SmithOak Park, IL

I have supported OneSky since the very beginning 20 years ago when they were named Half the Sky. They work inside China with orphaned, developmentally disabled, and children left behind in villages. They bring hope and training to nannies and parents. They have almost singlehandedly changed the orphanage system from one of hopeless, listless babies laying in cribs, to one of joyful, bright children interacting with caregivers. They have been incredibly successful inside China due to their patient and respectful work within the Chinese system. The founder, Jenny Bowen, was even given the honor of carrying the torch during the Beijing Olympics. That says it all.

We have been supporting OneSky for almost 20 years. This organization has been incredibly successful in impacting the lives of orphaned children. They have earned the respect and trust of the Chinese government. They have trained thousands of nannies and caretakers. They have established preschools and programs for teens. They continue to expand upon their goal of making sure every child knows the love and care of a family. I've watched them grow from an organization of one woman's vision to a multi-country organization working closely with international governments. Their techniques work and thousands of children are now productive young adults as a result.

I don't even know where to begin.
This is truly an amazing organization and I have seen first hand the outstanding work this group has done for China's children. I had the privilege to work alongside an amazing passionate team of Onesky employees and adoptee volunteers this past summer. For anyone who wants to learn more about the organization you MUST read Wish You Happy Forever by the founder and former CEO: Jenny Bowen. I have learned so much from this experience and it has made me realize how important and impactful community collaboration can be.
I can not wait to see what is in store for Onesky in the future.
This organization has been a key player in China's changing child welfare system and they deserve the world.

Lots of love,
Jenna

OneSky is one of my favorite non-profit organizations because of the mission it serves. I truly believe there is nothing more important than our children and giving them the proper care they deserve. I took part in the Student Volunteer Trip to Beijing in the summer of 2017 and it was one of the greatest experiences in my life. In Beijing, I got to visit the Chunhui China Care Home and volunteer to help take care of the abandoned infants and children with congenital diseases who needed physical nourishment. Currently, as the Financial Director of China Care Bruins at UCLA, I work to create fundraisers that raise money to sponsor two children at OneSky and in the future years, I only hope to give back even more to the children in China and Vietnam. Thanks for all the work that you do, OneSky!

This is a great nonprofit organization. I went on their adoptee trip this past summer (2018) and fell in love. The organization really focuses on children all over Asia. I think they are really making an impact on the lives of the children in the orphanages. They are giving them hope, care, love, and the help they need to prosper in this tough world. Having first-hand experience with them and China Care International, I really believe they are doing good for all the orphans and the end goal is for the children.

I first heard about OneSky when I joined China Care Bruins at UCLA. China Care Bruins focusses on mentoring young adoptees from China around southern California and fundraising to donate to OneSky. I joined due to my interest in adoption and special connection to being an adoptee myself. It was through these connections that I learned about how wonderful of an organization OneSky truly is. The donations that China Care Bruins made was proven worthwhile as we received updates about two beautiful children under the care of OneSky's programs which we supported. It is amazing to see the impact that our contribution made and it inspired me to see in person how OneSky's programs affected the children in China. Thus, I went on the OneSky Adoptee Volunteer trip in July 2018 and was astounded by the overwhelming amount of love and care that everyone working at OneSky's Chunhui Medical Care Home and the main Beijing office exuded. Since OneSky works specifically with structuring support programs for children in China, it was very important for me to see the people involved in making it possible were indeed kind and dedicated. OneSky has brought me back to where my life began and inspires me to help be a part of an amazing mission.

Ever since we came home from China with our daughter, we knew we wanted to do more to help all the kids left behind. Half the Sky (and now One Sky) have provided wonderful services to those children, giving them love and fun and new learning. They've found new ways for parents to be near their children and helped whole communities.

Where to start? How about in China, in a village, with people like you and me. And children who need care, and then Jenny Bowen. A woman with a vision.
I am merely a citizen of this world and can only do so much, but every one of us can contribute in our own way.
Bullet points:
My family adopted 2 children.
We learned about Half the Sky/One Sky.
I got to witness 2 preschools and foster famiies set up firsthand in 2005.
I watched children like mine get a new chance.
I cried and I laughed.
I helped a little I hope.
I still hope.
I still help.
Thank you One Sky. xxx

As someone who was an orphan adopted from China, this nonprofit is pretty close to my heart. I did research initially on charities that helped orphans in China and they seemed very reputable according to charity navigator. I've been sponsoring a child monthly and I appreciate all the work they've done so far including the new child learning center in Vietnam.

One Sky is an incredible organization. They train caregivers to give the kids the best possibe care. They also provide additional caregivers so that kids get more individualized attention. They build schools in the orphanages they sponsor, and train the teachers. They also find housing for foster parents, and furnish their homes. Really great work, with profound results.

I've followed and supported the work of One Sky - formerly Half the Sky - for over ten years now. I've seen their enormous impact up close, having visited their centers on several trips to China. They are driven by love and compassion, but they operate with killer efficiency and focus. As an adoptive parent of two Chinese daughters, I am immensely grateful for the work of this amazing organization.

My daughter was orphaned in China. She was very fortunate to be able to attend One Sky's Little Sister Preschool program so that she was able to have joy, the sense of love and appreciation from a caregiver, and learning experiences until we bright her home at almost age 4. When she arrived in America and learned that her big brothers were registering for school, her expectation was that she would be attending school too even though she hadn't been home long. For bonding purposes, the school even let Daddy attend school with her until she was ready to be dropped off and picked up. Her joy for learning, courage, confidence, language skills, love for projects, and resilience all seem to be related to the support she received through One Sky. We have continued to support this program and others for the past 6 years and are thrilled that so many more children will benefit from loving caregivers and supportive learning environments. Thank you OneSky!

My girls were adopted 17 and 19 years ago from orphanages in China. They did not benefit from Half the Sky's work and the developmental delays they both suffered were alarming. I visited their orphanages at the time of adoption and saw the institutional issues which contributed to their problems. I was confident that their adoptions were life-saving. Having seen the institutional despair first hand, I became an early sponsor of Half the Sky Foundation in hopes of improving the outlook of my daughters' friends that were left behind. I sponsored individual children and also donated to the general fund. I was thrilled to witness first hand the transformation of the institution that my first daughter came from when she and I visited it 10 years ago. After Half the Sky moved in, it was a happy lively place and the benefits were very obvious. OneSky is my main charitable organization at this time as the benefits are fast, measurable, and seem to grow exponentially as each teacher becomes trained.

He was so well cared for and loved, he was healthy and because of the love he received we never had any separation issues. Even his lip surgery was so well done that our surgeon did not have to touch his lip ehen he did his palate surgery.

This is an amazing organization providing desperately needed training for caregivers and services for orphans! Our son was adopted before this organization began. He suffered effects of long-term malnutrition and neglect that will stay with him forever. Lying long days alone in this crib, his brain did not develop properly. Crucial developmental milestones were missed. No amount of therapy can undo some missed connections in brain development! As a consequence, our son will forever have developmental delays. With proper infant nurture and stimulation as advocated by OneSky, this would not have happened. But now, if the family of every adopted child could reach back through One Sky and help just one child left behind in an orphanage, the future for all orphaned children would be so much brighter!

Like Jenny Bowen, I adopted a little girl from China. I poured everything I had into her and saw her light up and flourish in her new life. Like every other adoptive parent, I agonized about all the other children I hadn't brought home. They haunted me. Jenny Bowen took these experiences and acted on them. She taught and reminded people that love and care lavished upon young children by one, consistent caregiver does the most incredible things for them. I am so impressed with how far Jenny Bowen has taken this non-profit so far. She has gone right to the leaders of China and convinced them to use this new model of care! I am so amazed and grateful for her work. She inspires me every day and I think of her as I raise my daughter and teach my kindergarten students. Love will help them all to grow strong, as they should. They all deserve this care.

Like most parents who adopt from China, I am haunted by all the children still in orphanages. I could only help one directly. The organizers of Half the Sky are also adoptive parents, but they have done what the rest of us only wished we could do. They have created a wonderful organization that creatively and directly helps little children in institutions and gives them a special someone to love them, encourage and teach them, and even to keep a life book for them to document their early years. They train nannies to nurture rather than to merely feed and clothe the children. They use love and art to fill these children's lives. They work with the Chinese government to spread their method further and further. They see problems in particular orphanages and address them. A few years ago they invited me to give them some input. I mentioned that there are many sports-a-thons but as a non-athletic person I did not feel I could do much. What about art? Something I and others can do. They took this idea and created Art from the Heart, an art fundraiser which also celebrates and encourages both the donors and the children in China's talents. They also have pages on their site for adopted children to connect with children in China and for children here to use their ideas to fundraise as well. My daughter has asked for donations to Half the Sky instead of receiving birthday presents and many other children have done this as well. Half the Sky is an amazing organization and deserves all the support we can give them!

In July 2014 my daughter (adopted from China in 2003) and I were able to go back and visit her orphanage in Changsha, Hunan. The changes brought by OneSky/Half the Sky were breathtaking! We visited multiple rooms, from infants to toddlers and preschoolers. We were able to spend nearly an hour with toddlers in a playroom. We could see babies receiving cuddling and massages in the neighboring room. The toddlers were playing with and being snuggled by adults the whole time we were there. The soft flooring allows for playing sitting or laying down. The preschoolers were having snack at a little table and each of their cups had their photo on it. The room was full of preschool lessons. When we visited in 2003 all the floors were tile and the babies were in walkers, there were very few toys for the toddlers to play with, and only older kids when to school. All of the children in the orphanage in 2014 had special needs and previously these children were often underestimated & underserved. We personally saw dozens of little lives made brighter...and I know that hundreds upon hundreds have benefitted from the training and programs introduced into orphanages all over China by OneSky.

I will be forever grateful to this organization for being in my daughter's orphanage at the Yibin City CWI. I know with all my heart that the love and care she was shown by the nannies there made her transition into our little family so easy. She was at the CWI until she was almost 4 and had several surgeries. I know that through it all she knew that someone was there taking care of her and tending to her needs. Showing her how to explore and learn and become. Teaching her how to be brave and strong and fierce. What I always tell people about her radiant personality is that she came that way. And she is that way because Half the Sky and its infant nuture program and preschool program was there when she needed it. We love love love the fact that we have a memory book of her life with lots of pictures. We had it translated and we like to go back over it now and again. We see the pictures of the ayis holding her and knowing she was well loved even before we had her. We are so proud of the young girl she is now....people are shocked when we tell them she was older when she came to us. She seems so "normal"....just like her friends. That's because the Half the Sky people showed her what it was to be loved and cherished. Thank you forever to Half the Sky...because of you my little girl leaves a little sparkle wherever she goes.

We adopted 2 children from China. One had been in an orphanage with a Half the Sky program, the other was not. The differences between the two kids, and their adjustment to the adoption was dramatically different. Our daughter (HTS program) adjusted quickly, bonded quickly, and trusted quickly. We also have a baby book which means a lot to her. Our son (adopted second, no HTS program) had an extremely tough transition, and 3 years later we are still working fully gaining his trust. Half the Sky is making a real difference for the children in China, and in the future forever homes.

We have adopted from China three different times. Our last adoption was of an almost 2 year old girl from an orphanage with HTS nannies. It was clear that she was so well taken care of and loved by her nanny. She was the most healthy child out of our three adoptions. She attached to us so much easier than we could have imagined because she was clearly attached to her caregivers and knew how to accept affection. The scrapbook we were given was an amazing gift. Her nanny had documented so much of her progress during her time in the program. There were 1 year hand print and foot prints and photos from a 1st birthday party for our little one. It's hard to think about your children being in an orphanage during those major life events, but it made my heart to happy to see that she was treated well before we arrived. Before we arrived to adopt she had started the HTS preschool program and she was speaking a lot of baby Mandarin in her animated little voice.

Having been through the adoption process twice before we could quickly see what a difference that HTS made in the life of our youngest child. We are so grateful that she was a part of the program during her time in the orphanage.

Half the Sky saved my child. I adopted a little girl at age 3 from an orphanage that had been one of the worst. Half the Sky had been workings there only 2 1/2 years. We adopted two children from orphanages that were served by Half the Sky. Our children were healthy and had clearly been well cared for. When we adopted our daughter in 2003, we met another family who were in China for their second adoption. They told us that there first child had been adopted five years before, and that their daughter had been in very poor health. Her skin, hair and teeth had shown the effects of poor nutrition and care. They were struck by the good health of the children who were being adopted in 2003. It was clear to all of us that the work of Half the Sky had played a significant role in this major improvement in the condition of children in the Chinese orphanages.

My daughter was from a HTS SWI. She came to us at 14 months, happy, healthy, and ready to attach. She formed a bond with her old sister almost immediatley and us very soon after. When we went back to visit the SWI the day after her adoption, her HTS Grandma came up to us and my daughter lit up. Seeing my daughter so loved by all of the staff just made me feel so good about her 1st year of life. She is a well adjusted, happy, full of life 8 year old now. I credit the Nannies at her SWI that were trained by HTS.

In addition to the support and training for staff the benefited my daughter, there was a terrible ice storm in February of 2008. For over two weeks there was no access to my daughters SWI. There was no running water, no electricity, they were running out of food, diapers, forumla, and medications. HTS was not only able to make it to my daughers SWI but I had contacted them to see if they could check on my daughter. Not only did they get supplies to the SWI, they brought a Dr. and checked all the children. But they did not stop there, they sent me a personal email to update me. I will never forget the tears of joy streaming down my face when I read the email. Helpless half way around the world only two weeks away from being able to travel to China to bring my daughter home, other than a little cold, she was fine. They personally checked on her and took the time to let me know. What other organization would do that? HTS is one in a million!

I have served as the president of a China Care Club and have also had the opportunity to visit the China Care Home in Beijing, and it never ceases to amaze me just how much HTS and China Care do. I've seen how HTS's cause has inspired other college students to volunteer at our fundraising events to make a difference in a child's life. It is truly a testament to the excellent work that HTS does to see how our club has grown and garnered support from the student body and the community at large. Personally, after being active in a China Care Club for 4 years, I can honestly say it has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my college career, and I hope to continue my involvement with HTS and China Care even after I graduate.

As a student working with a student organization that is directly tied to Half the Sky, I have had the chance to see exactly what Half the Sky has done not only for the children overseas in China, but also for all of the students involved over here. Half the Sky provides top quality care for orphans while empowering students to make a change in the world and to give them a chance to explore their leadership skills while supporting a worthy cause. I had the chance to meet several Half the Sky employees over the summer while I volunteered at one of the homes affiliated with HTS in China as well as at a national conference in Boston, and every single person I talked to firmly believed in HTS's cause. Each and every employee was very friendly and enthusiastic, which I think speaks to the quality and value of the organization. Half the Sky connects students with HTS professionals and children to create an international network of support and care for the orphans in need.

I was able to help build a preschool and infant nurture room in an orphanage with very limited resources, and watch as local people were trained as caregivers. I also was privileged to be able to participate in daily life at the institution, which was so important to me because my daughter's first home was very similar. Now I'm a volunteer editor, and I will keep looking for ways to support this great organization.

I began helping with our high school China Care club my freshman year and was given the opportunity to lead it as president this year. I've been really grateful to be able to help lead fundraising events, and get people at my school involved with the club. Half the Sky has been great to work with, and I really appreciate how we can decide how to run our school club and our fundraisers ourselves, but also still have support and advice available from the foundation if we have any questions. Everyone from Half the Sky has been extremely helpful and kind, which makes leading the club very enjoyable and less stressful. Also I really like how we are able to direct our funds to specific causes that our club can choose, which makes donating more personal. Thank you for helping us see how we can make a difference!

Half the Sky has been incredibly supportive and helpful throughout my years as a China Care Club member (especially during my last three years as a board member).

Not only are they efficient and prompt in sending us updates (such as donor reports and status of children in the China Care Home) and opportunities to volunteer and network with other clubs (more than I could take advantage of, unfortunately), they also answered any questions we had & provided fundraising and member integration ideas.

As an organization itself, Half the Sky's mission is amazing; they give children a second chance via surgeries and pre/post-care.

As a graduating senior with four years of China Care under my belt, I would just like to say thank you Half the Sky for all you have done for me and UCLA's China Care chapter!

As a student leader of one of Half the Sky Foundation's China Care Club college chapter and a student who went on one of the first adoptee travel group programs, I am truly inspired by the work Half the Sky does for the orphans in China. Not only has the infant and preschool programs, the China Care home for children with medical needs, the teen program and foster homes for students with sever disabilities provide the loving care, emotional support and preparation for the future, but Half the Sky is training caregivers from all over China's orphanages to help give more children the love and care they need!
Another amazing part of what Half the Sky does is provide ways for students in high schools or colleges to make a difference and raise awareness about what is going on in China's orphanages today. Half the Sky provides amazing support to help the student run organizations be as successful as possible and continue to give back to such an amazing organization!

As a parent of a child adopted from China, I am grateful for the Half the Sky (HTS) program and for the nurturing and facility support that this organization provides to the children at Child Welfare Institutes. In 2006 I had the good fortune to be accepted as a volunteer to work at a HTS sponsored project in China. I witnessed, first-hand, the wonderful work being done in nanny training and in providing physical amenities. Now, as a volunteer editor and as a donor, I encourage others to join in assisting HTS to continue the great work being done for the children in China's welfare Institutes.

I am so honored to be one of the editors who helps with Half the Sky's update reports on their children. It is so apparent how much care and attention goes into writing the reports - the caregivers certainly do their best to ensure the child makes progress and document it well. I have seen it mentioned several times by adoptive parents that when they hear their child is in a place where Half the Sky is present, they feel relieved that their little one is in good hands until they can travel to get him/her themselves. I am so grateful for the work this organization does - they are shining light in the world!

The need for orphan child care in China is tremendous. Half the Sky is an extremely responsive and attentive to the true needs of this situation. They promote helping people learn to give these babies what they need, so they train teachers and caregivers IN CHINA. This is an astounding feat in itself!
In my volunteer role as a report editor, I read first-hand what these teachers go through with the young children. Half the Sky is an amazing organization!

Two years ago, I founded a China Care Club at my high school. My club supports the tremendous efforts of Half the Sky by raising money and awareness for medically fragile Chinese orphans. However, the two summers I have spent at the China Care Home in Beijing, a Half the Sky program, have embedded into my core a deep desire to give more than my love or money. Half the Sky inspires me to do more.

I have volunteered to be an editor for Half the Sky Foundation over the past few years. This organization's staff and other volunteers are always professional and efficient. I will continue to volunteer for HTS. Great work you are doing there.

Volunteering with Half the Sky has been a very fulfilling experience. While editing the reports, I can sometimes hear the pride in the care giver's text when she describes how the little bub has mastered the art of tying his/her shoe laces or that they have become confident little people. Describing each child's progress to such detail already tells you how wonderful the program is.

Even from a distance, as a volunteer editor, I can feel the love and warmth. Thank you for giving me an opportunity to be a part of this community.
