Mission: Manneqart was founded in 2013 as a 501(c)3 arts and education non-profit organization by new zealand born, us artist and fashion designer lee andersen of columbia, md. Manneqart sponsors an annual competition for the best sculptural/wearable artworks in each of four themes. It has since become a highly anticipated annual howard county arts event and a part of the annual columbia festival of the arts. Manneqart has reached out to other arts and community organizations and has engaged with both experienced and student artists, including becoming a "partner in education" with the howard county public school system and mentoring students at southern hs in anne arundel county. Manneqart has engaged in more than 150 artists in creating nearly 250 sculptural artworks that have been displayed at no charge many times in howard county, washington, baltimore and other locations. Manneqart has awarded nearly $50,000+ in prizes to artists, both beginning and professional, from around the country.
Programs: Manneqart has an annual sculptural arts competition, the first in 2013, featuring artists from around the world. We typically receive 50+ applications from artists who create unique and complex sculptures that must be wearable, not harm the person wearing the artwork and fit through an average size door. Artworks are made of various materials including including such things as coffee filters, surgical gloves, bathroom scrubbies, wire, corks, artificial turf and much more.
manneqart has an awards gala each year where artist cash awards are presented and where artwork sponsors and donors are recognized for their support of our programs. In 2017, we presented nearly $15,000 in awards at ten oaks ballroom where we welcomed 240+ guests.
in the fall of each year, we have a 2-week display of current and past artworks at multiple locations around howard county including columbia mall, columbia art center, north laurel community center, robinson nature center and this year the new manneqart museum in laurel, md at no charge to the public. In 2017, we also exhibited at westfield's montgomery mall for two months and for a special event at the wheaton mall.
the manneqart sculpture, hair and makeup event is held in june each year to present all of the competition's new artworks on live models, fully made up and professionally photographed for the annual manneqart gala. 1000+ people normally attend this free event at historic savage mill in laurel.
