Mission: The maine humanities council, a statewide non-profit organization, uses the humanities - literature, history, philosophy, and culture - as a tool for positive change in maine communities. Our programs and grants encourage critical thinking and conversations across social, economic, and cultural boundaries.
Programs: A general audience program for individuals who might attend a book discussion or attend a community seminar or other program.
community history, regrants & technical assistance- community history and cultural tourism providing grants to local communities, museums and schools, supporting multi-generational collaborations and research into the history and heritage of maine's towns. The maine humanities council provides grants of $500-$10,000 to community organizations around maine that support grassroots humanities projects. These grants are funded through maine's new century community program, and are awarded on a competitive basis to libraries, museums, schools, historical societies and other non-profit organizations in maine. New books new readers - reading and discussion seminars for adults with little reading experience. Veteran's book group - multi-session reading and discussion seminars for military veterans. Special reading and discussion programming for professionals working in the areas of domestic violence and hospice care.
