Mission: Longhouse reserve exemplifies living with art in all forms. Founded by jack lenor larsen, its collections, gardens, sculpture and programs, reflect world cultures and inspire a creative life.
Programs: Lhr hosted two exhibition previews, seven new installations, two benefits, the landscape award luncheon, the tenth student annual, 3 lectures, one concert, 7 horticultural tours, 8 twilight tours, one art tour and one international tour. More than 14,000 people came to longhouse, attending events and tours, and visited during our regular hours. Through our education outreach program, close to 3,000 children and young adults from long island schools, ranging from pre-k to college students, (plus more than 300 teachers/chaperones), visited the gardens and exhibits. Tours of longhouse gardens are provided free to school districts to reach out to communities and introduce children to art and nature in a beautiful and peaceful setting. The 60+ members of our dedicated volunteers have again proven themselves irreplaceable, donating more than 800 hours of their time. Winter benefit - february 15, 2017luminaries tod williams and billie tsien, architects received the lh award for their outstanding body of work. The celebration took place at one of their masterpieces, the david rubenstein atrium at lincoln center. A post-concert dinner followed. 150 people attended. Winter walks: winter wonderland walk - february 18, 2017late winter branches in bloom walk - march 18, 2017led by horticulturist alex feleppa, people enjoyed exploring the garden on brisk winter days and learning about the plants. Over 50 people attended these two walks. Springing to life walk led by alex feleppa - april 15, 2017guests enjoyed a preview of the gardens before the season opening with a walk led by lhr horticulturist alex feleppa. 50 people enjoyed this special garden preview walk-about. Educators' sneak peak walk-thru - april 20, 2017k-12 educators, principals and superintendents were invited for a special preview before opening day of the new installations and to hear about the exciting plans of the education program for the coming season. 50 educators attended. Arbor day at lhr - april 28, 2017longhouse reserve, along with ray smith and associates, hosted the ninth annual arbor day celebration here in the gardens. After a morning filled with demonstrations and hands-on activities, the class planted a tree with a plaque inscribed with their school, grade, teacher's name and year. 25 students participated. Rites of spring season opening/daffodil viewing - april 29, 2017new sculpture in the garden by john chamberlain, john crawford, marylyn dintenfass, judy kensley mckie, mark mennin, bernard venet, fred wilsonthis annual event opened the official start of the 26th season in which more than one million daffodil blossoms -- 200 cultivated varieties plus exotic bulbs -- were viewed in the longhouse gardens. The new artwork joins sculptures already on display by claus bury, dale chihuly, willem de kooning, bryan hunt, grace knowlton, sol lewitt, costantino nivola, alfonso ossorio, pavel opocensky, yoko ono, jim owen, ricardo regazzoni, tony rosenthal, toshiko takaezu and mario yagi. Over 400 people attended on a beautiful spring day. Longhouse collects exhibition - april 29-july 12, 2017collections included furniture, basketry, art fabrics, ironworks and bronze. Over 400 people attended the opening of this fabulous collection. National public garden day / may 12, 2017lhr opened to the public for a free day and lh horticulturist alex feleppa led a garden tour to an enthusiastic crowd. 50 people participated. Family day at longhouse - may 13, 2017guided tours, treasure hunts, book signings of popular children's books, performances and nibbles were provided free of charge to families to enjoy the grounds and discover longhouse. Over 800 people attended this popular communal event. Lhr insiders tour to croatia: history, culture and todayjune 4-14, 2017 participants enjoyed seeing the ancient world treasures, castles, museums, villages, and cities on this spectacular tour to croatia. 18 people attended this fabulous tour. Longhouse reserve student annual x - june 13, 2017the education committee of lhr invited students to participate in our tenth student annual. Guided by their teachers, they interpreted their visits to lhr in prose, poetry, performance, mixed media, craft, photography, painting, architecture, design and sculpture. More than 150 ribbons were awarded to kindergarten through grade 12 students at a ceremony and reception. Over 700 adults and children attended this popular communal event. Larsenworld: longhouse in east hampton - june 23, 2017a year in the making, with the cooperation of the checkerboard film foundation, this documentary interpreted the many angles that bring such richness to longhouse. This 23 minute film premiered at guild hall in east hampton following a reception and concluded with conversations with jack larsen, the director of guild hall, and the people involved with the filming. Over 80 people attended this much anticipated premiere. Moss, ross + gummer installations - june 24-october 7along with the preview of the new haven moss garden, two art installations were presented: toni ross's sanctuary entwined and don gummer's escape. Over 200 people attended. Nature's music program for children - july 11, 18, 25; august 1, 8, 15led by marlene markard, this six week parent-child program introduced children, ages birth through four, to music in a natural setting. The program intended to foster a life-long love of music and nature. 15 children accompanied by a parent attended this unique program. Longhouse summer benefit: boom! - july 22, 2017on a beautiful summer evening, lh honored alexandra munroe for her incredible work in bringing asian art to the forefront, and cai guo-qiang, an artist of many mediums, especially known for his work with gunpowder drawings and fireworks. An evening of music, dance, entertainment, sumptuous sustenance and silent auction were enjoyed by beautifully dressed guests in white. Over 600 people attended on a beautiful summer evening. Opera al fresco concert celebrating jack larsen's 90th birthday - august 5, 2017an inspired evening of operatic arias and duets was performed by soprano eglise gutierrez and tenor marco cammarota. Starting with a reception, dinner followed the performance and was enjoyed by guests on a balmy summer evening. Over 100 guests enjoyed this memorable night. Women artists: reshaping the conversation - august 12, 26, september 23conceived by toni ross and dedicated to elaine de kooning, this series of panel discussions were held to sold out crowds. 375 people attended this very popular and sold out event. Salon on the lawn - september 2, 2017hosted by the longhouse junior council, this lively event attracted a young and new generation of visitors with music, performances, and cocktails. 140 enthusiastic young people attended this event. Garden and home tour for longfellows - september 9, 2017jane and david walentas opened their stunning home for a tour and private reception of their beautiful residence. This event was in honor of those who designated lhr as a beneficiary, to ensure that longhouse will endure for generations to come. 50 guests enjoyed exploring the home and meeting the architects tod williams and billie tsien who discussed the details about the house design. Landscape awards luncheon and ceremony - september 16, 2017following a lecture at hoie hall in east hampton, guests returned to longhouse for a festive lunch and awards ceremony honoring kris jarantoski and sunbrella. Over 150 people attended this garden highlight event of the season. Floral finale garden tour - october 28, 2017fall foliage garden tour - november 4, 2017harvesting for the holidays garden tour - december 9, 2017garden walks led by lhr horticulturist alex feleppa. Over 60 people attended alex's popular garden walks. Insiders tour to japan - october 30-november 13, 2017this 15-day tour focused on gardens, art installations, architecture, textile, ceramic and bamboo artisans, while enjoying japan's exquisite cuisine. This sold out tour was enjoyed by 20 people. News from the garden: tropical gardenthanks to dennis schrader of landcraft environments, the tropical garden was installed again bordering both sides of the rill, located west of the lap pool.
