Mission: The Loka Institute is the lone voice linking the power of research, science and technology to the public good. We advocate for a politics of research, science and technology that provides individuals with the opportunities, skills, tools and resources to access and control their own lives and destiny. Despite the pervasive sense that such forces are beyond our control as individuals, experience demonstrates that when individuals have a voice and role in solving the problems they face, change can happen. Loka works to make that change a reality.
Programs: The Loka Institute's programs include our Community Research Network Project-a nationwide infrastructure of community activists, funders, and academicians. It offers tools, resources, information and support for community-based research practitioners worldwide. Our Deliberative Citizen's Panels and Scenario Workshops develop, adapt, and test participatory models that evaluate the social repercussions of scientific and technological developments. Other activities include public speaking engagements, trainings in community-based research and critical analysis of science and technology policy.
