At first, I want to express my deepest gratitude to my tutor and the Literacy
Council. When I came to the U.S, I could speak very little English and I
didn't know the American culture either. I was so lonely because I didn't
have any friends here. My tutor helped me not only with my English. I
learned many things from her. I appreciate the Literacy Council from the
bottom of my heart.
I remember I didn’t dare to go out without my husband with me. Because I only spoke a few greeting sentences in English. All of these things changed since I met my tutor. Mrs. Sandy in Frederick Literacy Council. During my first year in America many stressful things made me struggle. However, that has changed as my English became better. Whenever there are special days, like my birthday or holiday, she always gives me a warm feeling in my heart. I appreciate my tutor. She is not only my tutor; also she is my American mom. I live here, I am not a stranger, we live on the earth village, and we are family. I teach Chinese, without speaking Chinese, to American children. I connect between American and Chinese, as I am a bridge.

This is an organization run on a shoestring by volunteers (with just one essential staff member). Our tutors work one-on-one to teach English skills both to adult immigrants who need help learning English, and to native English speakers who have poor literacy skills. Learning English, or how to read and write, is essential for all the other parts of our students' lives as workers, parents, and citizens. Every dollar or hour contributed to this organization helps someone in a very direct and important way.
The Literacy Council does "life changing" work every day of the week. They help immigrants learn English, improve their conversation skills, study for the citizenship exam and learn about American culture and community. For those residents who need basic literacy skills, they open so many doors by helping people improve their reading and writing abilities. This enables people to find better jobs and improve the economic stability for their families. And best of all, they provide these services to the community at no cost to them. Volunteer tutors are trained and certified free of charge and the council provides all materials for students and tutors. It is an amazing organization and truly deserves support and encouragement in their mission.
The Literacy Council provides one on one tutoring for adults who need to learn to read and who are learning to speak English as a second language. All tutors are volunteers who meet one on one with their students. Tutors make a significant impact on their student's lives. Students can get better jobs, be better parents and contributing community members if they can read and speak. This low budget non-profit provides life changing benefits to the students who are often forgotten by society.
