Programs: The society believes it is the utmost resource for local history and, as part of its mission, the society operates the animas museum which is the only museum dedicated to the history of the entire county. The society is the keeper of the community's core personality and character, along with acting as the purveyor, interpreter and advocate for all aspects of la plata countys individual cultural and community history from prehistoric to modern times. The society pays close attention to the stories of the native people, european, hispanic and american immigrants, the development of indigenous and new economies, the evolution of la plata county and other important aspects of this region in the rocky mountains. The society provides meeting space for organizations that share interest in history specifically tailored programs for groups interested in learning more about local history. In addition, the society offers extensive educational opportunities for children including (1) life in a log cabin, (2) 1905 classroom experience, (3) junior curator program, and (4) traveling trunk.
