Mission: Empowering youth to graduate from high school and pursue their dreams
Programs: 4th - 8th grade programs:the kids of honor model uses a two tiered approach to helping youth reach their full potential. We begin by partnering with youth organizations already in existence, and give each site a pattern to mold and overlay their existing program. The program uses a point-based system of tracking each child's positive choices, and involves children and adults working together to assess personal behavior and set frequent goals. Every month, the students are acknowledged for their improvement and growth, and each site recognizes one student as the top point-earner, or monthly winner. At the end of the school year (or program term), the monthly winners are eligible to win the yearly award of a $500 scholarship. These funds are invested in the child's name and only available to them when they graduate from high school. Statistics:daily we reach about 700 kids through collaboration with our 15 partner programs. Kids of honor has celebrated 68 graduates - 3 in 2007, 14 in 2008, 26 in 2009, and 25 in 2010. From 2003 to 2005 the number of participants with failing grade point averages dropped by 7%. After establishing kids of honor in marion sarah peyton elementary we have seen a 45% decrease in office referrals. In just two years of operation, the five participating stars after school programs decreased their office referrals an average of 11%. Kids of honor programs continually see increasing numbers of attendance. Report card records show that 87% of participating students raised at least one grade in a core subject.
connection club and high school students:connection club: once a child has earned a spot in the connection club, he or she is invited to all of our activities with their families. Each child has the chance to maintain friendships, connect with family, and feel like an integral part of the community. The seven annual connection club events consist of one monthly service activity, one monthly educational activity and one monthly fun activity. We strive to show the kids how important it is to give back and to learn from others, but of course we do not forget to have fun while doing it! Yeah (youth excelling in academics with honor) beginning in february 2007, high school students belonging to kids of honor founded a club of their own. The club meets weekly at wicomico middle school and is student-run, allowing the group to choose the educational speakers and service projects in which they are interested in participating. The students also elect officers and establish rules for participation and order. Y. E. A. H. Helps with connection club events, learns tips for financial independence, and meets with representatives from local colleges to learn about the college application process and much more. In the past, the teens also earned school service learning hours by helping to plan and produce a family field day and an educational event for younger kids of honor participants. Additional activities discussed for the y. E. A. H. Program include interacting with and learning about local businesses, shadowing university students in actual college classrooms and peer mediation training. All of these activities will make powerful resume material, giving kids of honor teens an edge in their future endeavors. See the statistics listed under the 4th - 8th grade programs.
