Mission: The new york junior league is an organization of women committed to promoting volunteerism, developing the potential of women, and improving communities through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Its purpose is exclusively educational and charitable. The junior league welcomes all women who value our mission. We are committed to inclusive environments of diverse individuals, organizations, and communities.
Programs: Training and leadershipthe ongoing development of trained volunteers is a central component of the new york junior leagues mission and each year there is a series of internal volunteer-focused training initiatives as well as the new york junior leagues signature training programs that extend to the community at large. Through a series of workshops, the new york junior league provides volunteers with an opportunity to learn about relevant community issues and to develop philanthropically, professionally and personally. In fiscal year 2017, 19 trainings were held with over 2,214 attendees. In addition to these workshops, the new york junior league equips volunteers for leadership through leadership day and a series of specialized training for chairs, treasurers, and others committee officers. The nationally recognized, award-winning nonprofit boards clearinghouse (npbc) trains individuals from the community to be effective nonprofit board members and introduces them to nyc nonprofit agencies through a structured placement process. The training course focuses on board roles and responsibilities, monitoring fiscal policies, and understanding legal responsibilities, development of strategic plans, and fund development support. In fiscal year 2017, 125 people participated in the course and 68 nonprofit agencies provided placements and networking opportunities. The forum for nonprofits is an annual half-day education conference open to new york junior league volunteers and the general public. Attendees address key issues facing both nonprofits and the communities they serve. Established in 2001, the forum for nonprofits features various expert-led workshops and panel discussion on topics such as volunteer retention, technology trends, best practices for recruitment, and training and utilizing social media in the nonprofit environment. Junior junior league introduces the next generation of community volunteers to the world of philanthropy and volunteerism. Through a series of activities, preschool and elementary age children and their parents participate in philanthropic work together.
the new york junior league has been a leader in identifying and responding to vital needs of new yorkers since its founding in 1901. In 2017, more than 2,800 volunteers collectively donated over 250,000 hours of service to better the lives of women and children in new york city. Through direct service, advocacy, and collaboration with more than 60 other community organizations, the new york junior league embodies a positive force for change within the communities it serves. In fy 2017, the new york junior league focused on five areas of need: adult education and mentoring programs are designed to help adults gain access to education and health services that will assist them in living productive lives and also provide support as they face unique challenges. Child health and welfare provides guidance and support to at-risk children and teens through mentoring. Two signature projects help to support this objective: community health access module program (champ)* and cooking and health education for families (chef)**. Childrens education provides young new yorkers and their families with tools and opportunities to empower themselves and their communities through a variety of life skills workshops and educational support such as tutoring in math, reading, and writing and assists community organizations by providing educational learning opportunities. City impact focuses on making an impact in new york city at large. Two ways this is done is by creating a safe place for children to play through the new york junior leagues signature playground improvement project*** and by renovating one public facility through our community improvement project (cip)****. Culture and the arts provides arts and educational support to underserved children through youth-focused arts and music programs. Signature projects* community health access module program (champ) is in its 22nd year of presenting preventive health education programs/workshops to the new york city community. Topics range from preventing childhood obesity and diabetes to stress management and domestic violence advocacy. During fiscal year 2017, new york junior league volunteers presented 135 workshops for almost 650 clients. ** cooking and health education for families (chef) seeks to empower families to make life-long, healthy lifestyle choices. Through weekly workshops, families are provided with easy to understand nutritional information. Volunteers prepare meals with families that are healthy, easy to make, and affordable. They also provide fitness activities that are adaptable for a wide range of ages and fitness levels. During fiscal year 17, volunteers facilitated over 100 workshops for almost 1,000 clients. *** playground improvement project (pip) has helped transform manhattans playgrounds and parks for 26 years. The new york junior league works in partnership with the new york city department of parks and recreation to create bright, vibrant, and safe play spaces for the citys children and families. In fiscal year 2017, over 1,000 new york junior league and community volunteers dedicated over 5,100 volunteer hours to revitalize jackie robinson park. In addition, the new york junior league invested more than $80,000 in plantings, paint, and equipment (including environmentally positive bigbelly trash receptacles). **** community improvement project (cip) is in its 6th year of adopting a nonprofit facility such as a public school classroom, a senior center, a library, or a community center for a dramatic physical makeover. In fiscal year 2017, volunteers renovated a science lab within the harbor science & arts school. They focused on painting, installing new flooring, increasing storage space, and updating the electrical components of the room. We also added science tables, equipment, and technology for the students. Over 500 volunteer hours and $50,000 in materials were invested.
