Mission: An investigative reporting center with a two-fold mission: produce investigative and analytical stories on issues of importance to buffalo and western new york and educate young journalists in public service journalism.
Programs: Reporting: we hired a third full-time reporter and launched a beat covering criminal justice whose initial reporting included a story on how buffalo police are not properly trained in de-escalation techniques. We moved into new office space designed specifically for newsroom purposes, which includes a radio studio outfitted with state-of-the-art equipment to produce radio stories and podcast, as well as to view and edit video. We participated in a donor match campaign in december that was sponsored by the knight foundation. We also continued to cover problems with the buffalo billion program, and our previous reporting was cited by u. S. Attorney preet bharara when he announced criminal indictments involving contracts and state officials involved in the program.
environmental: our environmental reporter continued his coverage of lead poisoning in buffalos inner-city. One of his stories detailed the citys failure to test for lead in the water in the hardest-hit neighborhoods. For this work he won several state and national journalism contests. We also had major stories on a toxic landfill in wheatfield and radioactive waste at various sites in and around niagara falls.
programming: we staged our first gala, attended by about 260 people, which featured margaret sullivan of the washington post as keynote speaker. We completed our second and launched our third event series, which included an appearance by susan arbetter of the capitol pressroom. We continued to work with propublica and the columbia university graduate school of journalism on a data and reporting project on state economic development subsidies that subsequently published in 2017.
