Programs: In 2017, the organization continued its support for the international lyric art festival in aix-en-provence. The festival's 69th season demonstrated its ongoing mission to present new productions of opera classics, champion new works by contemporary composers, and return rarely heard masterpieces to the stage. New productions included mozart's don giovanni conducted by jeremie rhorer and directed by jean-francios sivadier; georges bizet's carmen conducted by pablo heras-casado and directed by dmitri tcherniakov; and, completing the festival's three-year stravinsky cycle, the rake's progress, a new production conducted by daniel harding and directed by simon mcburney. Additional season highlights included eugene oneguine, based on a novel by alexander pushkin with libretto by pyotr iiyich tchaikovsky and konstantin s. Shilovsky, conducted by tugan sokhiev with the orchestra of the state academic bolshoi theatre of russia; erismena by francesco cavalli and conducted by leonardo garcia alarcon. The festival also presented the world premiere of pinocchio by philippe boesmans, conducted by emilio pomarico and directed by joel pommerat. By fostering opera creation and supporting young artists, the academy of the festival d'aix gave audiences the chance to discover more than 300 young artists from over 40 countries in more than 50 public events including master classes, public performances, concerts, and recitals.
