Causes: Education, Secondary & High Schools
Mission: The mission of nvcs is to create a learning community in which all students, including those living in challenging economic circumstances and those living with emotional challenges and other disabilities, develop the skills and social fluency to lead fulfilling and contributive lives in their communities. Toward this end, nvcs will promote college and career readiness for over-age and under-credited, disconnected and at-risk youth aged 16-21 living on staten island, enabling them to graduate from high school prepared to excel in their academic, professional, and personal lives.
Programs: The new ventures charter school is a charter school validated by the board of regents of the state of new york. The school, located in staten island, new york, plans to create a learning community in which all students, including those living in challenging economics circumstances, living with emotional challenges and other disabilities. The school developed the skills and social fluency to lead fulfilling lives in their communities. Toward this end, new ventures charter school will promote college and career readiness for over age and under credited, disconnected and at risk youth aged 16-21 living in staten island, enabling them to graduate from high school prepared to excel in their academic, professional, and personal lives. Nvcs created an educational continuum of care model that focuses on the entire student body. The educational continuum care model allows for various academic and supportive opportunities to help establish common ground with students, teachers and the schools community. New ventures has taken significant effort to connect students to an in-school and an external community that facilitates their academic career and teaches how to maintain wellness for maximum self-sufficiency. Academically, all students participate in an educationally rigorous program following new york state teaching and learning standards utilizing a common core curriculum and standards with appropriately prepared lesson plans. Students are grouped individually with other students in small classes based on their needs as outlined in their individual learning plan. Macro scheduling is facilitating preparation for regents testing. Special education students are learning in an inclusionary setting and with an instructive individualized education plan. English language learners are also be assigned to inclusive and integrated classrooms and utilize the sheltered english immersion program model to facilitate rapid engagement. Our unique program blends project-based fieldwork, real-world internships and rigorous regents-level instruction to prepare our students for success.
