I have been involved with IHI since 1994. During those years I have seen IHI grow and expand its reach, providing various needed Community services such as : After School and Summer Camp Programs, Adult literacy Programs, Community Health awareness events like "Walk to live" .
Encouraging Parents and children alike to take responsibility for their health through exercise and diet. IHI had organized various other events always encouraging Community involvement.
In Liberia IHI is providing access to consistent health care through its Clinic and proactive awareness. There is also a Literacy Programs as well. IHI has gone through various socioeconomic climates, however because of the dedication and love of Community and Service, Imani House Inc continues to be a shining example of what a community organization should be, and much more.

Hello, I am former IHI Literacy student and I am 37 years old. Earlier this year I made one of the biggest decisions in my life and decided to go back to school for receive my General Equivalency Diploma (GED). I left school many years ago before acquiring my diploma and il is only thing in my life that has haunted me, you see;, l am an easy going person with everyone else, except myself. I have always felt that school is not for everyone, but I knew that I had to do il in order to achieve the goals I have set for myself. It took me a long time because I am a type of person that is hard on myself.

After being laid off from work, I knew the time was right and it was now or never. I researched a lot of schools before coming across a school called Imani House. After reading about the school, it drew me in and I was interest in it. The fact that they stated it was a one-on-one setting instead of traditional classroom setting made up my mind. I don't like crowds and because I have been out of school for such a long time, I felt the need for one-on-one learning. When I called about availability, I spoke to the head coordinator of the program. I knew from that moment this was the school for me. She made me feel so comfortable and wanted. The following week I started my classes. My instructors were the best. Without them I'm not sure if I would have finished.

Imani House is much more than a tutoring school. They take their time with you and give you special attention in the areas of your needs. They explain in great detail how to solve the problems and make sure that you get the answers correct and that everything makes sense to you.

I enjoyed learning there so much that I started sitting down with my mother on a daily basis
talking about what I was learning and I loved every minute of it. I was never this excited about school work in my life. ·

In conclusion, it only took me 3 ½ months to receive my GED. This speaks volumes about a school when a person like me who has been out of school for over 20 years can learn the work like I never missed any schooling at all. The educators there are fantastic and should be commended regularly for the work they do. They show you that they believe in you and make you so comfortable that you strive harder to do the best that you can. Their encouragement is wonderful and I have and would continue to recommend Imani House to anyone I come across in need of a GED.

Imani House Adult Literacy program has helped changed the lives of many. By providing free tutoring services for low-income individuals, the literacy program has helped improve the reading, writing, language, and math skills of students with a collective goal of preparing for the GED test. My experience with working as a tutor in the literacy program has opened my eyes to the educational needs of many living in Brooklyn, NY. Many of the students are immigrants, working parents, and young adults seeking to enhance their education in order to improve life for themselves and their families.

The year I was a literacy tutor at Imani House was very rewarding for me. The student that I taught was smart and hardworking. He use to be late for our sessions because he worked all the way in Queens but he was dedicated and would always attend the sessions even though he had so much going on in his life. I always felt like he really appreciated the work that we did and he was rewarded with success when he was able to take his citizenship test and passed it. I believe in this program and believe it is a great resource for our community.

It's been such a blessing to be able to have Imani House available for me and my family all these years. My daughter started the program 12 years ago. We had signed up for this after school program and by the grace of God 1st day of school they told me about you ever since. Imani House has truly been a blessing for me. I thank you so much.

Volunteering in the adult literacy program allows me (forces me) to refresh and broaden my cultural, social and political perspectives. It is easy to get set in our ways, to live each day without moving outside of our own patterns, to view society through a narrow, comfortable lens.

Interacting with adult immigrant students and observing the workings of an organization like lmani House causes me to reconsider established viewpoints and affords me a more balanced view of our community. (By community, I do not mean only Brooklyn, but the United States and its place in the international community - our greater human society.)

The dedication and determination of the students and staff, each working with minimal resources, is inspiring. It is gratifying to play even a small role in such a vibrant program.

I had the good fortune to be accepted as an Imani House tutor even though I only had six weeks to contribute. The program director saw the opportunity to match my capabilities with an adult ESL learner and also with a group working on the Social Studies component of the GED. I found Imani House to be a bustling, loving, learning center, a place where--following the director's dynamic example--tutors and students make the very most of the space and materials available and give it their all. The diversity of students and their needs could be daunting, but Imani house has attracted an incredible number of capable, committed tutors, spurred on and supported by Ms. Lowe to make a difference. And they do.

I began tutoring at Imani House three years ago.Although I have been a teacher for many years, I had never worked with adult immigrants before. So I didn't quite know what to expect.I can now say that it has truly been a remarkable experience.

There are two reasons for this. The first is the people themselves. Despite many odds against them, they are a detemined group. They yearn for an education, to improve life for themselves and their families, to gain knowledge. They are so happy to be at Imani and so grateful for help that it is a pleasure to teach here.

The second positive aspect of this work is the supervisor. She brings such energy and enthusiasm to the program that everyone feels uplifted.Whether praising a student or offering ideas to a tutor, she is crucial to our success.

The only constructive criticism I can make is that we are woefully short of materials. We have to scrape by without enough up-to-date workbooks, paper or copier ink.The students deserve more as reward for their dedication.

I was 20 years old & I still didn't have my GED. I felt like I wasn't excelling in life & I needed to do something about it. I printed out a list of GED programs, & I called lmani House & visited the following week. I liked it & felt comfortable immediately, but I was scared about math (math is my weakest subject). Within six months, I studied alongside the Imani House tutors & passed my GED the first round. This place truly is wonderful!
Because of this, I'm very excited to go to art school :)

I'm writing today to express to you how fantastic Imani House is and how grateful I am that my son is in the program.

My son has been in the program since kindergarten and I feel a sense of relief knowing that he is in the Imani House program after school and during the summer.

As a single mother of 3 children, living from check to check it is a blessing that I could send my son to the program. Imani House is not just an after school program they are like family. I don’t have to worry about my son having a meal after school until I get home from work, not getting help with his homework, not having more interaction with kids his age and doing fun learning activities because he has all that at Imani house. I don’t have to worry about him and the fact that I may not be able to afford an after school program and summer camp. I don’t have to worry that I may have to work on a holiday that schools open because we have Imani house.

The staff at Imani House makes so many things happen. Things like the Thanksgiving party for the children where families were able to get a turkey and wholesome provisions to prepare nutritious meals for our families. The fact that during Imani House meetings you have face time with the parents and give such a motivational speech, welcoming new children while catching up with children and families who have been in the program is just wonderful.

The program coordinators are very hands on, accessible to parents and along with the teachers ensure the safety and smooth sailing of the program daily. They are a wealth of knowledge on any queries parents may have.

I honestly don’t know what I would have done if my son didn’t have Imani house to go to. The Imani House team does an excellent job and I commend them for their service to the community.
